Maintaining Good Health Habits Over The Holidays

Writen by Jonna Reynolds

Q: I've worked so hard in the last few months. How can I make sure that I don't blow it over the holidays? I really want to stick to my mindful eating- but there is so much good food around!

A: The first step is to make a decision that you will not allow the holiday's to get in the way. Choose to make a commitment to yourself right now. Set specific goals to maintain for the rest of the month.

To stick to your exercise plan, choose how much you would like to exercise (ex. 4 times a week for 45 min- cardio, plus 3x week 30 min of strength). Then give yourself choices of activities- be flexible.

Block out the time on your calendar for your fitness appointments and stick to them. Think of creative ways squeeze in exercise to your day during the holidays. Can a walk with your mom count as exercise? Can you turn christmas shopping into a workout?

As for food, continue to focus on your mindful eating rules. You can eat those great foods that you only get this time of year, but pick and choose. Only eat those that are your favorites, when you are truly hungry, enjoy them fully, and stop when you are satisfied- NOT when you are full.

Want to have the capacity to eat more of those great foods? Add in extra workouts- they will make you even MORE hungry!

Watch the alcohol intake, especially where good foods are present. A few drinks will lower your inhibition and your ability to eat mindfully. If you choose to drink, try to do so far away from the food.

Choose to make this a priority for yourself this holiday season. Commit yourself to it and determine what you can reward yourself with once you make it through this difficult month. Your body and your health are important to you- don't blow it by not paying attention!
