Mothers Day Brunch

Writen by Gail Leino

Mother's Day is a day to express to your mother how much you appreciate her. When we were children, Mother's Day was much easier; our mothers didn't expect too much. We would come home with a picture we made in school, a card still wet with glue or a dandelion picked from the neighbor's yard. Our mothers were just happy to see that little bit of effort we put into it, and loved us just the same.

As we grew older, Mother's Day became a little bit more complicated. With the money from our first job we would run to the nearest Hallmark store and pick up anything with the words Mother's Day on it. Our mothers were still touched by the thought that we had spent our hard earned cash on them instead of blowing it all on things for ourselves. But then we hit adulthood and things got much tougher. We not only have our own mothers, but our mothers-in-law- a huge clink in the chain. We have spouses to consider as well as friends and other family members who are now mothers themselves. What is the solution? We can't spend all of our time and money on this Hallmark holiday.

The solution is a Mother's Day brunch. Our mothers will be touched that we took the time to select a restaurant that they would enjoy. Our spouses are covered because the brunch is for all of the mothers. Grace each mother with a corsage of a favorite flower or a color to match their outfits. Even if you don't have the budget or time to create a brunch out, have it in your own home. At http: there are great gift and decoration ideas. Put together the favorite foods arranged on a beautifully set table. With the work load on you, the mothers are free to relax and enjoy their special day.

Christmas Angels Those Who Touch Our Lives

Writen by Jan Verhoeff

Each year at Christmas time I begin to realize once again the number of people who have touched my life. Some of them are close family members, some are strangers, some just people who know my name, but all of them are special folks who have been kind, generous, or loving at some point during the year. Christmas Angels are there all year long, touching our lives and giving us that feeling of love and caring.

Last year, a special Christmas Angel touched the lives of my children and myself, in a dire moment of need, he stepped in and held my hand, literally through one of the worst moments I've ever experienced. While he stood to gain nothing, he touched my heart with kindness. One moment of caring that will last a lifetime. His only request was that I pass it on. He asked that I give someone else a gentle touch of love, somewhere down the line.

Another moment in time, another man, gentle and kind reached out and touched a child with a kindness I saw, allowed to watch, I saw him shape the future of a young man, giving him hope he had lost. A child's life changed in that moment. He knew he was cared for and loved. I've seen the child since, and he's made a difference he may not have made, if not for the gentle caring touch of a man who cared. The man asked the child to pass it on.

Christmas Angels give more than they receive, and offer far more than they ever give. They are those who keep the flicker of hope moving throughout our world, when love, faith, and joy have flickered out. These miracle providers step in and relight the candles of love, faith and joy with a flame so brilliant, it promises to burn forever, the light of hope.

I've been the recipient of that flicker of light, called hope. I can only hope you've met a Christmas Angel who has touched your life, given you hope when you thought all was lost, and reached out to you, when you felt unreachable.

I've also been that flicker of light, in the eye of a child needing a hand, a hug, a gift of love. It is the most joyous moment you will ever experience. Just the touching of a hand, the feel of love and life flowing through you to another human being is an experience worth giving.

If you want to be a Christmas Angel, it doesn't require much, anyone can do it, but you have to reach out to someone in need. Give them a hand, and a smile, and tell them they are loved. The moment you give your life will change. Don't let this season disappear from time, or the year go by without giving a blessing to someone near you.

"Christmas Angels" is a delightful tale of a miracle bringing joy to the lives of a family in need. It gives hope in a fading light, and joy beyond measure. Get your copy of this family story today at http://www.lulu.com/janverhoeff

A Fun Kid Halloween Party Idea Is A Haunted House Theme

Writen by Nancy Johnson

A fun kid Halloween party idea is to turn the party into a haunted house! Kids love Halloween parties and Haunted Houses so why not combine the two? This Haunted Halloween party idea can be set up a family room, garage, or backyard.

Make announcements shaped like a haunted house with black paper, and white or yellow markers. Let everyone know what day, time and location of your haunted house Halloween party. Let the kids and guests know to dress up as ghosts, ghouls, a mad scientist, and monsters.

Once you decide on the location for the party, look at the room or yard to locate any safety concerns, any off-limit areas of the room or yard, and where to place decorations. Ideas for decorations and supplies include:

  • White sheets, tablecloths or fabric to drape over furniture
  • Black fabric or tablecloth to cover any bright areas
  • String twinkle lights, flashlights and litesticks
  • Dry ice or fog machine with adult supervision
  • Lots of spider webbing and creepy creatures
  • Scary looking jack-o-lanterns
  • Assorted large clear jars for a scientist lab area
  • Make tombstones from cardboard or foam blocks
  • Haunted sounds and eerie music

Cover any furniture or large items with white sheets or cloth. Place or hang scary decorations such as spiders, bats and rats around the room or yard. Lots of jack-o-lanterns piled in corners really adds to the effect. Make a graveyard with cardboard tombstones and plastic skeleton bones. Set up a table covered with a sheet for the mad scientist's laboratory. Large jars with green tinted water can display a cauliflower brain, green olives in a ball of mozzarella cheese looks like an eyeball, and lots of creepy bugs.

Lighting really adds to the effect of your haunted house Halloween party. Cover any really bright areas with black or dark cloth and hang twinkle, clip-on black and strobe lights in key locations. Look for areas that might become hazardous if too dark and add more lights. String up lots of spider webbing all around the room. Use dry ice with adult supervision or a fog machine to add to the spooky effect.

Serve Halloween party finger foods such as:

  • Bite-size pizzas (an olive in the center looks like an eye)
  • Fried-ravioli (looks like knuckles) with red pizza sauce
  • Chicken wings (tell the kids they are bat wings)
  • Frog-eye salad (ambrosia with green grapes)
  • Bubbly brew (punch)
  • Cocoa Cat Cookies (chocolate cookies cut into cat shapes)

Play spooky music and use a strobe light to play kids games such as Musical Jack-O-Lanterns (use pumpkins instead of chairs), Pin the Hat on the Witch, or Freeze Tag if you are using the backyard. Send everyone home with a treat bag full of goodies!

Christmas A Favorite Story Christmas Lights

Writen by Terry Weber

One of my favorite Christmas stories is about a great scientist who went for a walk in his garden one sunny morning. Along the edge of the path he noticed a new anthill and the great activity of the ants who lived there.

Naturally, the scientist leaned over to get a better look. But as he bent closer, his shadow fell on the anthill and the sudden darkness terrified the ants. Meaning them no harm, the scientist quickly stepped back and sat on the nearby grass to think. He thought to himself: "If I could - somehow - become an ant for a short time, then I could learn the ways of the ants and I'd be able to tell them of my good wishes for them."

Ever since Jesus was sent, as a baby in a manger, to live as one of us, and as the light of the world, we all have a greater understanding of God's love for us, here in His garden.

Speaking of the light of the world, - Christmas lights are everywhere this time of the year! They're in the post office, on the fire house, in the stores and on almost every house in town.

Christmas is lights. And, for me, the best lights are ones I see in people's eyes. As you visit folks durng the holidays, be sure to watch the eyes of the grandparents, the aunts, the brothers and sisters, your frineds and certainly - the fathers and mothers.

Of course, the lights in the children's eyes are more exciting to watch than fireworks on the Fourth Of July! Yes, Christmas is lights. And, in a manger, in Bethlehem, was born on that day,the very first Christmas Light.
Merry Christmas to you.

Thanksgiving Football

Writen by Sean Carter

Fun and games are always an inevitable part of entertainment for the young and the old alike. People in America celebrate this festival of charitable giving through their avid participation in the game of football that brings in waves of sheer joy and pleasure in the hearts of multitudes of fanatic football fans who are driven mad by football mania during this festive season. Over the years, football has become synonymous with this joyous festival of Thanksgiving.

Many interesting traditions permeate deep into the festival of Thanksgiving such as the game of football compliments this festival of merrymaking. Professional football was the last of the contemporary trends of celebrating the spirit of Thanksgiving. In 1874, eleven years after Lincoln's proclamation, the first intercollegiate football game was played. Two year later the Intercollegiate Football Association was formed in the northeast, which instituted a championship game principally to amuse the people on Thanksgiving Day. Every year, strong competitors like Princeton and Yale would vie with each other to bag the most coveted winner's trophy. Players, students and fans would wear their school colors as a mark of representation with banners flying high from carriages, hotels and business establishments of New York City. On Thanksgiving Day church services would wind up early to accommodate the fans, with the game kicking off the season of festivity for the social elite in New York. It had gained such popularity that soon by mid-1890s, 1,20,000 athletes from colleges, clubs and high schools partook in 5,000 Thanksgiving Day football games across the nation.

The custom of watching a match of football on Thanksgiving Day has evolved during the early decades of twentieth century. As football paved its way into the heart of the people winning hearts of millions, giving it a huge popularity as early as 1920s and 1930s and earning itself the much prestigious position that it enjoys at present, many people began to visit the football stadium to watch the same. Renowned teams playing for the world famous football league of America eventually established the tradition of playing nationally televised games on Thanksgiving afternoon. Besides the conventional competition organized by the nationally recognized football league in America, many high schools and colleges also organize "Turkey Day" football games over Thanksgiving weekend, often between regional or historic rival. However, Thanksgiving football played in schools and colleges of America, has now more or less faded into oblivion in most sections of the country with it being kept alive only in two franchise cities of this globally recognized football league of America, namely Detroit and Dallas, where Thanksgiving football is very much a way of life.

Thanksgiving football more often than not is associated with the team of Lions and a tradition that has been popular since 1934 in the city of Detroit. The game has been the idea of G.A. Richards, the first owner of the team with ferocious lion like quality players comprising the team. In fact four generations of Detroiters have been a proud part of the American celebration of Thanksgiving. Some 71 years later, fans residing in the state of Michigan have transformed a local event into an annual holiday event, giving it the shape of single greatest tradition in the history of American professional team sports. In fact no other team in professional sports can claim to be so much a part of an American holiday as that team with ferocious lion like players' team with Thanksgiving. This team has hosted a game every Thanksgiving Day since 1934, with the exception of 1939-1944 due to World War II. The Dallas have also hosted football matches every Thanksgiving Day since 1966.

We thus find that it all saw its genesis in 1934 when a local radio executive, G.A. Richards, had purchased the Portsmouth (Ohio) Spartans and moved the team to Detroit, the Motor City. The Lions being nouveau arrive in town had taken a backseat to the Baseball Tigers in the sport pages. Richards had practical reasons for scheduling the game on Thanksgiving Day as he was also wise enough to figure out that the best way to give publicity to the team would be opting for the Thanksgiving Day contest for attracting the Motor City fans during the teams' first season. The fierce clash between the Lions and the invincible World Champion, meaning the robust Bears of Chicago proved to be an all time classic. The Lions were exceptionally good with eight wins backing them, leading them to their entry alongside the Bears with a 10-1 record. But Chicago had even a better record holding a commanding position with 11 straight wins. The match then reached an interesting phase where a win in the sole fateful game would ensure whether the Lions will get the first-place tie with the Bears. Two weeks in advance of that fateful match, 26,000 tickets were sold out for the "Turkey Day" clash in the University of Detroit Stadium. Richards was not disheartened over the last two losses rather pretty content the way his team performed in its very first year. His faith and confidence in the team was well rewarded when Lions won the 1935 America's popular football league Championship. The final match was scheduled on Thanksgiving Day when the Lions defeated the Bears 14-2 to bag the west Championship trophy. Radio with its huge publicity potential was used as a bait to capture the audience. Richards along with the nationally recognized broadcasting radio company, set up a 94-station network to broadcast the Lions-Bears showdown. Since then the league conventionally schedules two nationally televised games on Thanksgiving, usually featuring the famous football players of Dallas, one of the most successful and popular franchises in the sport and the players of Detroit, one of the least successful.

2006 will be the 87th season of globally acclaimed American football and is presumed to run from September 7 to New Year's Eve, December 31. Three games have been ideally scheduled to be played on Thanksgiving Day. In addition to the traditional annual game between the world renowned American football players of Detroit and Dallas home games during that day, the Kansas City Chiefs who hosted games during their days in the football league of America, will relive that tradition in 2006 by hosting the players of Denver on Thanksgiving. All these games are scheduled to be broadcast in prime time.

Friends and family all over America usually prefer to huddle around their radio or TV sets to catch the live telecast of the match while munching on the special dishes prepared to commemorate Thanksgiving. Thus each Thanksgiving would actually revive the old, classic tradition of enjoying a match of football as a part of the celebration. Over decades, football and Thanksgiving has established a strong bond, leading to a high adrenaline rush.

Affordable But Memorable Christmas Presents For Your Loved Ones

Writen by Dave Poon

Christmas is the most awaited time of the year where you have every excuse to splurge on shopping gifts for yourself, your fiends and your loved ones. If buying expensive gifts is not within your budget range but you still want to give presents to your friends and loved ones, there are a lot of cheap Christmas presents that you can buy.

Your gift may not cost a lot in terms of money, but its true worth comes with the time that you spent thinking of something that you think the person would love, instead of just wrapping gifts in random.

Here is a list of some cheap Christmas presents that you can give to your friends and loved ones to make the Holiday season even more special:

1. Baked and cooked goodies.

You can dig up some old family recipes and prepare a special sauce, cook pasta or a special dish, or bake some fruitcake, cookies and other Christmas goodies that can be enjoyed by the young and old alike. Your kitchen should be stocked with food so just open the refrigerator and you are bound to find something special that you can cook and give to your loved ones – this makes for a cheap yet delicious Christmas present.

2. Handmade items, arts and crafts.

If you know how to knit or sew a good stitch, you can knit a cap, shirt, sweater or any item to give as a cheap but nice Christmas present for any of your loved ones. The 'labor of love' that comes with making such a personal item will make your gift even more wonderful.

If you love to sketch or paint, you can put together a framed picture that painted yourself, or a handmade Christmas card or a handicraft item. The possibilities are endless, as long as you put in your talent and a little imagination in making the perfect present to give during the Holidays.

3. Personalized gift items.

Buy a plain old mug or wine glass from a thrift store. Then, spray paint or stencil in a personalized Christmas message for the recipient of your gift, including the name. Wrap it in a cheerful Christmas wrapper and voila – you have an affordable yet very personal gift item to give!

4. Use your desktop or laptop computer to print out a special Christmas present.

Save a picture from the Myspace profile of all of your special friends, then print them and have them made into one of those cute buttons, or buy a classic-looking picture frame from a discount store. Insert a personalized Christmas message to make a great Holiday present.

If your friend or relative is a writer, or an executive, pull up your Photoshop program and make a mock magazine cover with your friend's picture in it. Add in funny headlines, then print the page and frame it to make for a cute and memorable Christmas gift.

Even with a small budget or no budget at all, you can just let your imagination run wild and you can surely come up with cheap Christmas presents to give your loved ones during the Holiday season. It is, after all, the season of giving – and the people to whom you will give the gift to will appreciate it more if your Christmas present for them is something personal that suits their taste and personality.

Christmas Trees

Writen by Elizabeth Morgan

There can be no Christmas without a beautifully decorated fir tree. According to history, the tradition of decorating trees in winter precedes the birth of Christ. The Romans were known to have decorated trees with metal during a winter festival that honoured Saturnus, the god of agriculture. According to myth, a paradise tree was decorated with apples to celebrate the feast of Adam and Eve on December 24. Folklore describes how Martin Luther, to share his experience in an evergreen forest, brought a tree home to his family and decorated it with candles.

The very first tree was decorated for Christmas in Latvia in 1510, and the earliest written record of a decorated tree is from a diary dated 1605, from an area which was in Germany but is now a part of France. It was apparently decorated with apples, candles, and candies. In the US, the first Christmas tree retail lot was established by Mark Carr in New York in 1851; prior to this all trees came from the forests.

Now around thirty-six million trees are grown every year for sale at Christmas. And, in the US, the states of Oregon, California, Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and Washington are the leaders. Among the firs that we popularly term as Christmas trees are the Scotch pine, Douglas fir, Noble fir, Fraser fir, Balsam fir, and White pine.

Christmas trees introduce magic into the home, and spread happiness, peace, and joy. Select a tree with care. Be sure to measure the space where your tree will stand so that you don't buy one too big or too small. Choose a fresh tree, one that is lush and green with just a hint of brown pine needles. The needles should be resilient to the touch, and not fall off. If you shake or drop the tree only a few needles should fall. Buy a tree that has a straight trunk. Most farms offer to blow the trees before you take it home, to get rid of loose needles. Take home a cleaned and netted tree –it is easier to handle.

Learn all about how to care for the tree and remember: for each tree cut and taken home at least three must be planted. Decorate the tree with love and care, involve all the family members—it promotes togetherness.

A few tips are: to keep the tree fresh and green, ensure that it has sufficient fresh water; use lights that are soft and will not heat the tree or burn its leaves; put the lights on first and then the garlands or streamers; use ornaments that represent every member of your home, even ancestors; if you are artistic make your own ornaments; use natural materials and sparkle that does not contain any lead. Christmas is a tradition: use an heirloom for the tip of the tree, like a star or angel.

Be a good citizen and keep the tree away from an open fire or appliances. Keep streamers and tinsel away from light sockets, always check the lights before use and buy light strings that are approved by the Underwriters' Laboratories. Be sure not to overload the electric circuit and endanger the lives of family members over the holidays. Above all, recycle the tree.

Creating A Unique Party

Writen by Elaine K. Stephen

Looking for a great theme for a holiday or special occasion party? Why not throw an Angel theme party! Angels are a great theme for a Christmas party, birthday party, "Little Angels" tea party, baby shower or wedding shower. You can weave Angels into almost every aspect of your party. Here's how:

1. Make Angel party invitations on your computer. There are many great card creating software programs available, types and colors of stationery and invitation size envelopes available at stationery stores and free clip art web sites on the Internet for creating your one of a kind Angel party invitation.

2. Make an Angel banner. There are many great card creating software programs available, banner stationery available at stationery stores and free clip art web sites on the Internet for creating your Angel banner. Here are some Angel banner greeting ideas for creating your one of a kind banner:

Have An Angelic Christmas
Happy Birthday Angel Child's Name
Welcome To My Angel Tea Party
Angels Shower A New Life Today
Guardian Angels Shower You Today

3. Make an Angel centerpiece. An Angel candle, Angel figurine or Angel collectible and a little imagination can decorate your party table(s). Here are some ideas for creating a one of a kind Angel centerpiece.

For a Christmas party entrance way or buffet table have 3 different height Angel candles place on a candle plate or platter you already have. Decorate the candle plate with Christmas silk greenery and a Christmas print bow around the candles. For a large party with guest tables, have one small candle on a small plate with a little silk Christmas greenery and a smaller bow. For a Birthday party buffet or cake table have a birthstone Angel figurine sitting on a cloud of cotton. For a tea party table have a miniature Angel printed tea set on top of a small sturdy box covered with Angel printed cloth to look like a table cloth. For a baby shower buffet or cake table have an Angel figurine holding a baby in her arms on a cloud of cotton. For a wedding shower buffet or cake table have an all white fiber optic Angel collectible surrounded by party favors.

Make an Angel shape cake. Bake a small cake round and a large cake round. The small cake round is the head. From the large cake round cut a triangle piece in center. The triangle piece is the Angel's gown and the 2 side pieces turned sideways become the Angel's wings. Ice and decorate.

Instead of ice cream or packaged candy with brand names, you can very easily make Angel shape candy. You can buy inexpensive candy molds and candy melts at a craft store. All that is required for the candy melts is a microwave oven. Wrap the Angel candy in clear plastic wrap or foil or you can buy inexpensive candy wrappers at a craft store. Candy melts come in many colors such as red and green for Christmas, traditional chocolate for a birthday party, pink and blue for a baby shower and white for a wedding shower.

Have Angel party favors. Here are some ideas for Angel theme party favors.

For a Christmas party Angel ornaments
For a Birthday party or tea party an Angel pin, bracelet or necklace.
For a baby shower Cherub Angel refrigerator magnets.
For a wedding shower kitchen towel Angels.

For entertainment, play a Angelic game.

For a Christmas party have all the guest dress up as Angels. With Angel pens, all the guests vote for the best Angel costume and the guest with the most votes wins an Angel gift. For a Birthday party or a tea party have a draw the best Angel with Angel pens contest. The birthday girl or party hostess picks the winner, excluding herself of course, and the winner receives an Angel gift. For a baby shower or wedding shower have 1 Angel party favor that is different from all the rest. Wrap all the Angel party favors in tissue paper (baby colors for a baby shower or white for a wedding shower) and have the guests sit in a circle. While a short piece of Angelic music plays, the guests pass the party favors around the circle. When the music stops everyone opens their party favor and the one who holds the unique party favor in her hand wins an Angel gift.

Here are some more Angel theme party ideas:

For a Christmas party play Christmas songs that mention Angels in them and have the guest name that Christmas tune. For a birthday party, instead of cake candles, have a large Angel candle next to the cake to blow out and make a wish. The candle is also one of the birthday presents. For a tea party, complete an Angel craft for lots of Angelic fun. For a baby shower purchase inexpensive iron-on Angel decorations (cloth or embroidered) and packaged baby wash clothes. Iron the Angel decoration onto the baby wash clothes and use for napkins instead of paper napkins. These can later be washed and used by the new Mom. For a wedding shower purchase inexpensive iron-on Angel decorations (cloth or embroidered) and inexpensive white cloth table napkins. Iron the Angel decoration onto the table napkins. These can later be washed out used for another Angel theme party.

Select one or two colors for the Angel party theme and have matching plates, napkins, table cloths, balloons, etc. Here are some color combination ideas:

For a Christmas party red and gold, green and silver, white and midnight blue. For a birthday party the birthstone color for that month. For a garden tea party pastel yellow and green. For a baby shower pink and blue or pastel yellow and green. For a wedding shower white with the brides flower color choice.

For party decorations hang inexpensive, light weight Angel ornaments from twirled streamers. These Angel party decorations should match your color theme for the party.

An Angel theme party using these tips and tricks is sure to have your guest talking favorably about your party for years to come. Why some of your guests might give you the highest compliment a party hostess can get by copying you and having an Angel theme party of their own!

December 2005 Amp Closure

Writen by Peggy Tsatsoulis

We've all heard the line, when one door closes another one opens. Well, this is the way that I feel about 2005. Entertainment channels are doing recaps of all of the notable, entertaining, and even crazy events of this year. I can't help but reflect on all that has happened.

2005 offered some unique challenges endless choices, and perspective altering experiences. As I watch all of these year end wrap up shows, I am reminded of two things:

1) There is a good bit of time left in 2005. Time where we concentrate on giving to those we love and to those who are less fortunate. To those closest to us, it is the thought and intention of love behind the gift that means the most-whether it is acknowledged or not. This intention of love and goodwill lifts our spirits and keeps us ALIVE!

2) The month of December is our last opportunity of the year to tie up loose ends. It is an opportunity for closure. It is an opportunity to settle a conflict, apologize for a mistake, or reconnect with someone who hasn't been at the top of our list. It is our last chance of 2005 to appreciate this year for all of the challenges and opportunities it has brought. It is our last chance to savor the growth and learning that has resulted at this stage in our lives. It is our opportunity to reevaluate our vision and our purpose; as a means of moving closer to who we are meant to be.

So, on Dec. 31st, let us celebrate the end of a significant year, closing the door so to speak. At the same time, invite the opening of 2006's door, and look forward to all of the great opportunities and possibilities with anticipation.

***Simple Solutions: Top Ten Tips on Saving time during the Holidays!**

1. Delegate Delegate Delegate: You do not have to do everything yourself!

2. Say NO: Commit to only those things that are absolutely necessary!

3. Keep Clutter to a Minimum

4. Use Technology: Shop online

5. Keep Your Calendar Near: Do not commit to anything unless you consult the calendar first.

6. Give yourself more time than you need when traveling:

7. Don't procrastinate: Get it done now- there isn't much time for later these days!

8. Self Care: Take time to decompress, Figure out what calms you down and do it.

9. Get support: Have a buddy who you turn to to vent about the Holiday Rush. Once you have vented move on. . .

10. Be ware of Food and Drink: Holiday parties are in abundance during this time. If you are bloated and hung over the next day, it will take you twice as long to recoop and get going.

Colonial Costumes Make A Great Halloween Outfit

Writen by M. Smith

The Colonial Era was a fascinating time period for the United States. For many, times were tough. The first people to come to the Americas dealt with hardship as they tried to survive in a land they were not familiar. Once the Revolutionary War broke out, towns and cities were better established and the colonists eventually won their independence from England.

Why Colonial Costumes?

Certain areas of the country require the use of colonial costumes. At Jamestown in Virginia, people dress up in tradition colonial outfits and give visitors an authentic colonial experience by reenacting life during that time. In other parts of country, such as at Lexington and Concord in Massachusetts, the start of the Revolutionary War is reenacted each year. Those mock battles also require traditional clothing and colonial costumes.

Not Just for History

However, wearing colonial costumes doesnít need to be restricted to historical reenactments. You can easily dress up in a colonial outfit for other events such as for Halloween and costume parties. They arenít spooky but for certain costume parties, they are applicable. For example, some towns on the east coast host colonial themed costume parties where all the people must dress in period clothing. Traditional foods are served and music from the Colonial Era is the main source of entertainment.

Where to Find Colonial Costumes

There are a few ways you can end up with a colonial costume. First, check your local costume shops. If you live in one of the thirteen original colonies, chances are you should be able to find traditional colonial costumes. Also, check with local theater groups and your local library. Again, this is only a good suggestion if you live in an area that has a higher demand for colonial costumes.

Another option is to purchase the costume from a specialty shop. You can either buy the colonial costumes online, from a catalog, or from a store. You also may be able to rent. Also keep in mind that making your own costume from a pattern you either buy or create yourself is another option. If you do decide to make it yourself, you may want to research and see what traditional fabrics and colors were used. Then again, you may want to modify the costume a bit to suit your own purposes.

Even though once your daughter or son reaches the age of 16 they are still technically children, they feel very grown up and this day is very important to them so keep this in mind when planning the big bash. Here are some tips to make the day go as well as possible allowing for the raging hormones that are bound to pop up during this time.

The first thing you need to do is sit down with your 16 year old and ask him or her what they would like for their special day. It is after all their day and they should have the kind of party that they want, within reason of course. Make sure though you discuss the ground rules of the party such as noise level and curfew and appropriate behavior with your teen before the celebration actually begins. There should be no miscommunication here. Make it perfectly clear what is and what is NOT acceptable.

Make up a guest list based on the space available and your child's desires. Make your 16 year old understand that you can't invite the whole world so keep the list down to closest friends if possible. Think of a creative location for the party such as the beach or maybe a roller skating or ice skating rink. Even a bowling alley or pizza parlor is fine. Leave this up to your child within reason. Make sure you send out your invitations at least two weeks in advance. You want to make sure you give everyone enough time to respond and get gifts.

Whatever menu you come up with for the party make sure you have plenty of food. Get extra if there are going to be boys there as boys at this age are very active and get very hungry. If you're not up to cooking, order pizza. This is a favorite of everyone and you really can't go wrong with a few well made pies covered with sausage or pepperoni.

Have a variety of drinks at the party. Even though teens drink a lot of soda they will not be upset to see things like punch and sparkling cider. As for the music, buy a bunch of blank tapes and let your kid put together a mix of favorite tunes. The last thing your kid wants is for mom or dad to pick out the dance selections. Let's face it, parents are just not cool when it comes to kids music. Unless of course your parent is Ozzy Osborne.

Order or make a very special cake. Decorate it up to the sky. After all, this is a very important day and the cake should be one that makes a big hit just looking at it. Of course, it should taste good too. If you're going to be at the party, keep your presence low. Remember, this is your kid's day, not yours. By following the above tips you should have no trouble giving your son or daughter a sixteenth birthday that won't soon be forgotten.

Fourth Of July Celebration Let Freedom Ring

Writen by Gail Leino

In a time when many Americans are fighting for our freedom, and the freedom of others less fortunate, Fourth of July celebrations are undergoing a metamorphosis before our eyes. No longer just the joyous Fourth of July celebrations of my past, this day now brings to mind those who have made the choice to give their all in their defense of the freedom of others.

While this note of solemnity is present, I think it is important to continue to celebrate the day of our independence. I don't think our soldiers would want it any other way, because now we celebrate them–the men and women who are fighting for the freedom of others.

Typically this day is filled with picnics, parades, and fireworks, but including the ones who cannot be with to celebrate, adds a whole new aspect to the revelry of the Fourth of July celebrations. Remember them by wearing a red, white, and blue shirt printed with the name of a soldier overseas, whether it is a family member or someone you never met. Wear a black arm band printed with the name of someone who lost their life in a war. It does not have to be a recent war. It can be your friend or relative lost in Vietnam, Korea, WWI or WWII, or any war. Tie a yellow ribbon around a tree in your yard, or tie one to the flag you wave at the parade. Just remind everyone that there are some not at home celebrating, and wave the flag for them.

Traditional picnic foods like hamburgers and hot dogs cooked on a grill, potato salad, and baked beans are still the standard fare. In most areas across the U.S., July fourth is extremely hot, and most people enjoy something cold and soothing. Try making an old favorite in a patriotic theme. Home made ice cream! With electric freezers, nobody has to wear their arms out cranking, and the ice cream mix can be made ahead of time, frozen just before time to eat, and be eaten from disposable cups, with throw away spoons, for minimal clean up. Plain vanilla is white, but a few drops of food coloring (and fruit, if you like) can add the red and blue, to make it a perfectly patriotic Fourth of July celebration.

Home Made Ice Cream

2 pints half and half
4 Tablespoons vanilla extract
4 eggs
5 Cups of sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
enough milk to finish filling the freezer
Food coloring and/or fruit (optional)
3 Cups of rock salt (for the freezer, not the ice cream)

Mix half and half, vanilla, and eggs. In a pot on the stove top, cook this mixture until it begins to thicken (eggs have to be cooked) add remaining ingredients, except the rock salt, and put into a freezer to get the mixture as cold as possible. Put the freezer together, add ice and rock salt, and follow your freezer directions.

Happy Fourth of July!

Top Ten Tips To A Terrific Valentines Day For Women In Relationships

Writen by Gayla Swihart DeHart

So Valentine's Day is upon us yet again, and most of us want to be wooed and romanced by the one that we love. Hopefully that will be the case, but either way, here are some suggestions for how you can do your part to make this day a special day for you and your guy:

1. Send a nice note or treat with him to work - put it where it won't be found until later, if you can. Write something sweet or sexy or both - whatever he prefers (sexy is usually a safe bet!), and let him know that you appreciate all that he does for you.

2. Schedule time to prepare to see him at the end of the day - prepare as though it was your first date. You know what that means: shave the TOP of your legs, make sure your toenails are pretty, remove any unwanted hair, etc.

3. Break out the lacy lingerie. He has seen enough of your comfy-wear. Give him a treat. Men are very visual and this will be greatly appreciated, if only for the brief time you might be wearing it.

4. Wear something sexy on top of the lingerie. Remember about men being very visual? Even if you are not going out, he will like to feel like he is still worth the effort that you put into grooming yourself when you were first dating.

5. If you have children, try to get them to bed early.

6. Give your man time to unwind when he gets home - perhaps a foot rub or just some quiet time with no kids, no demands.

7. Tell him why you fell in love with him and what you love about him today.

8. Do NOT talk about chores, future plans, projects, problems, etc., just for one night. Everything (except an emergency) can wait until tomorrow.

9. Let him know that you think that he is attractive and sexy - try to be creative.

10. Don't Forget: call or e-mail your single girlfriends and wish them a Happy Valentine's Day. Meet them for lunch if you can.

Women like to be pampered on Valentine's Day (and every other day, for that matter!). But there are two people in your relationship, and sometimes it takes one person to start making an effort at romance to get things moving along in the right direction again. Why not let it be you? Remember how fun it was seducing him early in the relationship? Try it again and see how you like it - and see how much he likes it. You may find yourself with a more attentive man on your hands. How great is that?

Christmas Reviving The Outrageous Oldtime 12 Days Of Christmas Fun

Writen by Bernadette Dimitrov

The twelve days refers to the twelve festive days after Christmas that is from 26th December to the 6th January. Celebrated since medieval times it started on the day after Christmas as Christmas day traditionally was considered holy and not for 'partying'. The 12 days were filled with merry-making and continuous feasting. It was once a most welcomed break for the workers where all work accept for looking after animals would stop and restart again on 'Plough Monday' the first Monday after the Twelfth night. Traditionally a Yule log was kept alight for these 12 days and was considered a bad omen if it went out before time!

During the twelve days it was popular for people to visit each other with traditional minced pies. A Lord of Misrule was appointed and role reversals were common. For example masters would serve their slaves and even slaves could hold a public position during the 12 days.

A popular 18th century tradition was called the 'Twelfth Night'. On the twelfth night people would disguise themselves with animal masks and costumes while celebrations were rife! Often pantomimes were performed which mocked the traditional authority where rules were turned upside down! Another tradition rose on this night where men dressed as women and women dressed as men! Celebrations were always followed with the eating of a 'Twelve Night Cake' in which the person who found a pea (specially baked into the pie) in their slice was deemed King or Queen and were waited on with much delight!

Later evolved the game known as 'charades' played out on the Twelfth Night. It is believed to have arisen out of these earlier fun celebrations. Cards were presented and you had to act out over the Twelfth Night the character on your card.

Twelfth Night Practical Jokes!

Particularly in England during the 18th century they loved to play practical jokes which became a much loved tradition on the Twelfth Night. You may recall the children's verse 'Four and Twenty Black Birds Baked in a Pie' which is related to a famous English practical joke commonly played during this time. Presented to guests on their plates were pie cases with live birds hidden inside. To the much surprised guests once they opened the crusts the birds began to sing then fly off. I think it is good that this particular joke is no longer practiced as it is not kind to the birds to encase them even if it was only for a short time - it is not humane behavior.

Unfortunately today the Twelfth Night celebrations are no longer practiced and are a faint memory now part of history. The Twelve Night is more commonly known today for putting away one's Christmas tree and decorations and a holy day of celebration for the Three Kings who it is said took twelve days to find the baby Jesus.

Christmas Games A Fun Way To Kick Off The Holiday Season

Writen by Kevin Ryan

Christmas games will create memories for years to come. Here are a few fun games the whole family can enjoy during the holiday season:

Reindeer Antlers – Get 2 to 4 teams. Give each team a pair of pantyhose and give each player a balloon. If teams are small, add more balloons (about 6-8 per team). At the word "GO" the teams will race to make reindeer "antlers". They'll blow the balloons and stuff them into the pantyhose as fast as they can. The first team member to get a full set of "antlers" on his head and sing the first verse of "Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer" will win it for his team. *If kids are playing, make sure an adult is conducting this Christmas competition because anytime you are placing something over your head you need to be aware of hazards.

Christmas Kisses – Divide up into 2 teams for this relay game. Place a bowl of Hershey's Kisses on a table along with some over-sized mittens. Line up the teams about 10 feet from the table. At the word "GO" each team will send a member to the table where they'll put on the mittens and remove a kiss from the bowl. They'll then un-wrap the candy wearing the oversized mittens put it in their mouth, returning to the line and tagging the next player. The first team to have all its members successfully pop a candy kiss into their mouth will win.

Christmas Card Toss– Get a laundry basket and place it about 6 – 8 feet away from the players. Give each player a specific place to stand and 5 Christmas cards of different sizes. Each player will toss their cards at the basket. The person with the most "ringers" wins. The "catch" to this holiday contest is that it's much harder than it sounds. The card will flutter just about any where except the direction you want them to!

Christmas games are a great way to turn your holiday party into a fun-fest for all!

Funny Couples Costume Ideas For Halloween

Writen by Rose Smith

Tired of the same old typical Halloween costumes. You know the ones….vampire, witch, or mummy. It also seems that everyone just "has" to wear the latest movie craze costume as well, like a Batman Begins costume. Maybe it's time to come up with a more unique and funny Halloween costume…just to be different.

If you're somewhat crafty and handy with a sewing machine, many amusing costume ideas can be pretty simple to make. It just takes a bit of ingenuity and creativity. Even so, if you don't have the time or patience to create your own Halloween costume, maybe a friend of yours can help. As a last (or perhaps first?) resort, you can also buy most of these costumes online although it will just cost you a bit more.

So for those wanting something a bit different this year, here are 3 funny Halloween costumes that are easy to make. Perfect for those couples that like to dress up together!

**Plug and Socket**

Materials needed: black cotton material, heavy white iron on interfacing, large square piece of foam (enough to fit around hips), scrap cardboard, gold colored paint, hot glue and gun, black long sleeved shirt, black pants.

1. For the electrical outlet costume, measure from your knees up to your shoulders, then double this length and cut. For the width, measure from shoulder tip to shoulder tip and add an inch. Cut your current length of material to the proper width.

2. Fold the material in half width-wise (ie. if you hold the material in front of you it still falls the full length from shoulder to knees). Cut a hole out of the folded end so your head will fit through. Hem the opening.

3. Slip the material over your head so that it's inside out. Carefully pin the material together 3 to 4 inches below your underarms on each side. Remove the costume and sew seams from the bottom up to your underarm pins. Hem the bottom of the costume.

4. Cut out 2 large socket shapes from the white iron-on interfacing. Carefully cut two rectangles out of the inside of each socket shape (where you "plug" would go). Iron the sockets to the front of the outfit, one above the other.

5. Dress in a black shirt and black pants (or skirt). Slip the costume on and you're done.

6. For the Plug Costume, take the white foam and carefully cut a whole through the back third of the foam piece (not in the center – you want more foam in front to act as the "plug"). Step into the foam and slide it up over your hips. You made need to adjust the opening to fit. If necessary, make two black straps and attach them with a glue gun to the inside front and back openings of the foam and slip the straps over your shoulders to hold the foam in place.

7. Cut 2 "metal plug connections" from the scrap cardboard. Paint with gold paint. Let dry and then carefully slice into the front of the foam to position the plugs. Hot glue into place. Your "plug" costume is finished.

**Traffic Lights**

Materials needed: yellow cotton fabric, 2 squares each of red, green and dark yellow felt, matching colored thread or iron-on double-sided interfacing.

1. As above, cut a tabard from the yellow cotton. Measure from knee to shoulder, double the length and cut. Figure out the width by measuring from shoulder to shoulder and cut your length of material to the proper width.

2. Hem all edges. Fold in half and cut a semi-circle on the fold to fit your head through. Hem the opening. Cut two 4" wide strips of yellow material about 5" to 6" in length (this will vary depending on how large or small you are). Slip the costume on and pin the straps to the back and front on each side near your waist. Sew into place. You might also choose to hem the sides as in Step 3 of Plug and Socket Costume.

3. Cut a red circle, dark yellow circle and green circle. Position on the front of the costume. You can either sew these one or use double-faced iron-on interfacing to secure. Wear black pants and a black, long sleeved jersey underneath.

**Tacky Tourists**

Items needed: white Bermuda shorts, tacky Hawaiian shirts, tacky sandals (for the men, don't forget to wear socks with your sandals), beach comber hats, plastic flowered leis', white zinc ointment, camera, straw beach bag, large funky sunglasses.

1. Just dress up. Add some of the zinc across your noses (don't want sunburn!) and you're good to go.

And there you have it. Three costumes that are simple to make and fun to wear. All it takes is a look around your house to find "pairs" of items that could be turned into funny Halloween costumes that would be perfect to wear as a couple this year.

Christmas Gift Buying Guide

Writen by Terrell Jacobs

The year 2005 is drawing near to its end, which means that the holiday season is approaching once again. And that means lots of Christmas shopping-- at least for most people.

Regardless of whether one looks for the perfect gift for a spouse, girl/boyfriend, mother, father, son, daughter, cat, et cetera, it must be pointed out that every year has its trends, especially among children --- Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, He-Man, Cabbage Patch Dolls, etc. In times more recent, of course, technology seems to be the key to the perfect Christmas gift

But whether you are the type to give your loved one a paper clip, or an SUV, the following list is an attempt to sort of ease the stress of Christmas time shopping for the typical American. The following gift suggestions are quite random, as a matter of fact; some are popular, "trendy", even; others simply aren't. Either way, happy holidays—and shop safely.

  • Shopping for a bookworm? Carter Beats the Devil by Glen David Gold is certainly a worthy choice. It's a critically-acclaimed piece of work—and for good reason. It's a novel about the life and adventures of a vaudeville-era magician, Charles Carter, otherwise known as Carter the Great. A sizeable volume, it is full to the brim with an assortment of three-dimensional characters, fictional as well as real; the incorporation of historical figures into the prose (think Harry Houdini and even President Warren G. Harding) serves only to tighten the book's grip on the reader's attention-span. "One of the best seasonal reads in the past decade…a single-read wonder, closer in tone to an intellectualized Indiana Jones adventure, but far more satisfying."—Austin Chronicle

  • Give Ali G a chance! Perhaps you are shopping for a young one—one who happens to be over 18, preferably, just to be safe. If that be the case, and you don't mind subjecting other people to a bit of profanity, then you might at least want to consider purchasing Da Ali G Show: The Complete Seasons, 1 and 2 on DVD. Arguably one of the funniest television programs to come out of the United Kingdom and HBO in recent years, it involves actor Sacha Baron Cohen and the trio of characters he portrays, most especially the character Ali G—a Caucasian "gangsta" wannabe type from England who travels to the U.S.A. in order to conduct interviews with celebrities and politicians (among them: Ralph Nader, Newt Gingrich, and Pat Buchanan). Ali G asks some of the dumbest questions you will ever have heard coming from anyone's mouth—and the DVD itself contains some hilarious extras, like a "glossary of Ali G jargon" (Wot is yous banging on about?= What are you talking about?). The whole thing has to be seen to be believed.

  • One of the most popular, hence obvious, gift ideas for any age group: an apple iPod. Unfortunately, though, iPods tend to cost around $250, depending on where they are being sold, and that can be unaffordable for some families. The good news is that for half the cost you can purchase what is called an iPod Shuffle. Sure, it doesn't hold as many songs as the regular device (240 tracks for the Shuffle, 5,000 for the Apple 20 GB iPod M9282LL/A) but it's still a worthy investment or gift, and you save a lot of money, too.

  • Give your grandmother the gift that keeps on giving…the bad guys more than they bargained for. Especially during the holidays, it isn't uncommon to hear of an increase in robberies, muggings, purse snatchings, etc. Maybe you have a friend or relative who might benefit from a gift that will come in handy in the event of a criminal attack. There are many examples, ranging from a Panther 100,000-volt stun gun for just under $20, to the Advanced Taser with Laser available for about $600.

  • And for the kids The much-anticipated film adaptation of C.S. Lewis's The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe has just arrived in theaters all over the country. And while it won't be coming to DVD any time soon, the entire Narnia series is available in audio book format-- unabridged. The Chronicles of Narnia CD Box Set can be found in bookshops for around $75. And for those of you who have a certain fondness for the actor Kenneth Branagh, well, the entire set is narrated by Kenneth Branagh.
  • Random, indeed. Even if those suggestions really didn't tickle your fancy at all, it is desired that they at least served as inspiration for some gift ideas of your own. Shopping for Christmas presents ought to be fun—and with a little imagination it can be.

    Halloween An Ancient Celebration

    Writen by Michael Russell

One night, in neighborhoods across America, you will find monsters, ghosts, witches and other characters haunting houses up and down the street. October 31, Halloween, is one of the more popular holidays for children. What child wouldn't want to dress up as a monster or fairy and score a bag of candy in the process?

The origins of Halloween are ancient. 2,000 years ago in the part of the United Kingdom which is now Ireland, the Celts celebrated the beginning of their new year on November 1. As a result, October 31, or Samhain as the Celts called it, was a night to celebrate. The Celts believed that on that one night each year, the wall between the worlds of the living and the dead were easier to cross over and the barrier was thinner. Because of this, they believed that the spirits of the dead returned to the world of the living and caused all sorts of trouble and damage. Since the spirits were present on earth, the Celts believed that their priests, the Druids, were able to make predictions about the future more easily.

Since this celebration was an end to the summer and a beginning to the long, dark, cold, winter the people were hopeful if the Druids were able to make positive predictions for the hard time ahead. After the Romans conquered the British Isles, the Celtic celebration of Samhain was combined with a couple of Roman holidays. Feralia was a day that the Romans honored their dead in late October. The other holiday was in honor of Pomona, the Roman goddess of fruit and trees. Pomona was associated especially with the apple and because of this, the tradition of bobbing for apples may be associated with Pomona after her holiday was lumped in with Samhain and Feralia.

With the spread of Christianity, Halloween was incorporated into a new holiday, All Saints' Day, which was a day to honor saints and martyrs on November 1. This holiday was also called All-hallows or All-hallowmas (which is derived from the Middle English word Alholowmesse, another way to say All Saints' Day). The night before this holiday, October 31, began to be known as All-Hallows Eve and soon, just Halloween. Some time later, the church decreed that November 2 would be known as All Souls Day, a day to honor the dead. It was celebrated much like Samhain, with bonfires, dancing, parades and dressing up in costumes. Together, the three celebrations, the eve of All Saints', All Saints' and All Souls', were collectively called Hallowmas.

The way we celebrate Halloween in America, trick-or-treating, is probably related to the All Souls' Day parades in early England. At this time, the poor would beg for food. They would be given "soul cakes" in return for praying for the family's dead relatives. Eventually, this turned into children visiting neighborhood houses and being given treats such as beer, food and money.

With the new flood of immigrants in the late 1800s, the millions of Irish entering the US helped shape the celebration of Halloween. From Irish and English traditions, Americans began dressing up in costumes and going house to house asking for food or money. By the end of the 19th century, many people began to try to mold Halloween into a holiday that was more about the community and community celebrations than about spirits, pranks or witchcraft. Parents were encouraged to make the parties for their children and families less frightening and attempt to take out the fearful aspects of Halloween.

Today Halloween is the second biggest commercial holiday in America. Americans spend billions of dollars on candy, costumes and parties. Children look forward to Halloween every year, partly because they are able to dress up and be a different person or being for a night, but mostly because of the loot they receive from going door to door in their neighborhood.

    Chocolate Mothers Day Gifts

    Writen by Kevin Stith

Women and chocolate just go together. In fact, it wouldn't be an exaggeration to say that the chocolate industry largely survives because of women. Most women will tell you that they can't say no to chocolates. It's a taste they savor, obsess about, and can't get enough of. It also understood by many to release feel-good chemicals in the brain. No wonder it is perhaps the most popular present for every occasion, especially Mother's Day. A box of chocolates will melt your mother's heart, and she will love it.

Buying chocolates for your mother will be easy, as you can buy them everywhere and there are many of choice. You can buy her bars of her favorite chocolates or go for an assortment of chocolate truffles. Your choice in chocolates with filling is also endless. You can get her chocolates with nuts, chocolates with chewy centers, chocolates with caramel, or chocolates filled with liqueur. You can even buy sugar-free chocolates for the diabetic or the calorie conscious. Alternately, you can also buy a basket made of wicker or plastic or a handmade bag and fill it up with a variety of chocolates.

You can even try to make chocolate for your mom. You will be able to find a number of recipes with different levels of difficulty. The simplest recipe is to make her chocolate dipped strawberries. This is an all-time favorite. You mother will not only love your gift but will also be touched by the effort you put into it.

    The Gift Box

    Writen by Sadie A Peterson

And what exactly is a Gift Box? Simply put, it is a box for gifts. Big deal, right?

So why do you need a Gift Box? To keep all those gifts in that you can accumulate throughout the year ... all those gifts that are purchased ahead of time, thus making your Christmas less stressful and more enjoyable ... all those gifts that when purchased throughout the year do not break the budget by all being purchased at once.

If you don't have a Gift Box, a specific place to put all your purchases, they will be scattered throughout the house and some will inevitably get "lost" and by the time they are found, they might not be suitable anymore. My Gift Box is just an ordinary box that I keep in the closet. It is unobtrusive yet easy to get to.

But a Gift Box is not only for Christmas presents. It can be used for any gifts that you buy throughout the year ... for birthdays, anniversaries, whatever the giving occasion.

When you put a gift into your Gift Box, label it somehow. I put a little sticky note on each gift with the name of the intended recipient. I also keep a notepad at the top of the box with the same information so that I can look at my list any time I need to rather than having to take everything out of the box just to see what's in there. And once you give a gift away, don't forget to cross it off your list. Label them when you put them in the box or you'll forget at some point who they were intended for. Trust me on that one!

Then when you need a gift, either for a birthday or when Christmas is a few weeks away, go to your Gift Box before you go shopping. Some of your gifts will already be there which will reduce or even eliminate the need to go shopping. Instant stress reducer!

    The Origins Of Valentines Day

    Writen by Paul W Wilson

Every year February 14th is celebrated as a day for love, exchange of gifts, promises of eternal passion, and more. The inspired pen poems inspired by their love and admiration for the women of their dreams while others just go to shops and buy commercially available verses.

Valentines means candy, chocolates, perfume, red hearts, balloons, and more. Have you ever wondered when the celebration first originated? Well in ancient Rome, February heralded the coming to spring a time for rejuvenation, fertility, and growth.

In ancient times, Romans celebrated in February a festival to honor the god of fertility who provided them with progeny and ensured a god crop. In Rome February 15th was celebrated as the feast of Lupercalla and Feb 14th as a holiday in honor of Juno the queen of Roman gods and goddesses. On the eve of Lupercalla a glass jar was filled to the brim with chits on which were penned the names of all eligible girls. Then young men would draw a chit each from the jar and the girl whose name was on the chit would be his partner for the celebration. This was a method by which ancient Romans introduced eligible boys and girls to one another.

Much later in the 3rd century BCE when Emperor Claudius II ruled Rome there lived a priest called Valentine. And when Claudius passed a decree that young men in his empire were not to marry, Valentine defied him and used to consecrate marriages secretly. He was sentenced to death and thrown into prison. While awaiting his execution Valentine penned a letter to his love and signed it "from your Valentine." After his death Valentine became a martyr and saint and was popularly known as St Valentine.

Wonderful legends are woven around Valentine's Day. In Wales young people exchanged as gifts wooden spoons which were hand carved with decorations of hearts and key holes. The decorations conveyed "you hold the key to my heart or you unlock my heart." In other places women were given gifts of clothes and if they accepted the gift then it conveyed that they were wiling to marry the man who has sent the gift.

In 1415, Charles, the Duke of Orleans is known to have penned, from his prison in the tower of London , what were known as "poetical amorous addresses" to his wife in France, he is believed to be one of the earliest creators of valentines.

Just as companies like Hallmark sell cards for Valentines Day in the 15th century people bought little booklets with verse in them ---they then made their own valentines using the verse to express their thoughts. For example a valentine could have the hand drawn illustration of a knight and his lady with Cupid the god of love shooting arrows into the knight's heart. In the US it was after 1723, that popularity of the celebration grew. People imported the "booklets of verse" all the way from England and copied the verses on to gilt edged papers. Then a Ms. Ester Howard in around 1830 decided to be original and create American Valentines that were marketed as Worcester Valentines.

Since then with changing centuries and tastes the celebration has taken on new hues with young men and women, children, as well as older couples creating newer ways to celebrate and declare their undying love.

Adult Fairy Costume Ideas Look For Inspiration In Fairy Tales And Ancient Myths

    Writen by Chris Ehm

Ah, it's time for a costume party, and you're thinking of wearing a fairy tale costume. Need some inspiration? Simply walking to your bookshelf will yield some excellent ideas, if you have a book on fairy tales or an old, dusty book of mythology from your school days. However, perhaps you want to get a little naughty this year, show yourself off and feel sexy in a revealing outfit. Will you still find inspiration from mere children's tales? Well, prepare to be shocked . . .

    Naughty as They Wanna Be

Open a book on Greek or Roman Mythology, and you'll quickly realize most of these stories are about gods and goddesses lustily pursuing each other or unsuspecting mortals. These myths and stories are chock full of torrid affairs, adultery, kidnappings, wanton orgies, transformations into base animals, sexual pursuits, lethal snares and bloodlust!

Zeus's adventures often involve seducing a beautiful mortal woman, with Helen of Troy one such result of a passionate rendezvous. Stories abound with dryads and nymphs ensnaring unwary guys and gals, and Homer's Odysseus, returning home after the sack of Troy, often had to fight off the charms and wiles of sexy evil sorceresses and sirens.

Ahh, such wild fun back then!

    Dark Fairy Tales

Closer to today (well, from the last 500 years), we have children's fairy tales. Think Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella are the innocent stories as told by Disney? Nope, the stories we read to our children are sanitized translations of brutal medieval European folklore. For example, Cinderella's wicked stepsisters mutilated their feet to fit into the slipper, and instead of a fairy godmother, doves helped transform her. Those same birds later pecked the eyes out of the stepsisters for their deviousness! In the earliest version of Sleeping Beauty, she does not awaken from a chaste prince's kiss, but from one of her twin babies sucking the poison from her finger! The prince was certainly no gentleman, and he was already married to boot.

Yes, people's minds in the past were just as dirty as they are today! When you dress in cute fairy outfits, don't think of them as childish, but as expressions of how naughty the original tales are. Here's a few Halloween ideas, taken straight from the sources:

Athena, Venus, Diana or other Greek goddesses – They usually wore a simple white dress, with gold jewelry, a belt, and sandals with laces criss-crossing up the leg. A wide variety of costumes exist, from simple cloth to elaborate robes with draping cloth to short, revealing dresses. Don't forget the tiara!

Dryads and nymphs – They don't have wings, but these creatures, usually depicted as sexy young women, usually live in trees or lakes, and take a liking to young men! Look for short skirts with a woodland theme, sheer fabric, and a tiara of leaves and sticks. In ancient mythology, nymphs were the guardians of nature, and often servants of gods and goddesses, though a few stories have them successfully ensnaring handsome guys.

Red Riding Hood – In the original tale, the wolf actually ate both her and her grandmother, and the huntsman cut open the belly of the wolf to rescue them. You can find a variety of flirtatious outfits online, such as sexy short red dresses, a red cape and black boots. Bake some cookies and share them at the party. If there're wolves lurking in the crowd, tease them with your goods!

Sleeping Beauty and the lecherous prince – If you're a couple going to a party, dress as a sexy fairy princess with a pillow. Your prince charming will fall for you all over again!

Sexy Snow White – In the original tale, the wicked queen was ultimately captured and forced to dance in hot iron shoes until she died. You don't need to be so cruel, but since the mirror says you are the fairest of them all, flaunt your beauty with a sexy red and blue bodice, short yellow skirt, white stockings, cape and headband. Don't forget to bring your apple.

4 Easy Ideas For Halloween Decorations For Your Yard

    Writen by Nicola Kennedy

Some communities are rather dull and drab during the holidays, while others go all out and decorate with style. This occurs at Halloween time as well as other holidays. Here are some easy ideas I have seen over the years that will transform your yard on October 31st:

Jack-O-Lanterns – These are still the best yard decorations, as they can be done by adults and children together. Kids love scooping out all that goopy mess inside, while adults like the illuminated finished product. Don't forget to go online and look for cut-out stencils. Instead of carving out a face this year, you can carve a hissing black cat with his back arched or a witch in front of a moon.

Cardboard Cut-Out Headstones – These are so simple! All you have to do is cut out headstone shapes from an old box and paint them with a glittery or flat gray paint. If you want to get really crafty, you can add names of friends you are sure will be stopping by to the stones, along with a rhyming cause of death. The popular example I remember goes: "Here lies good ol' Fred. A great big rock fell on his head." Not only will they make the yard look great, but they will be a conversation piece, as well.

Hanging Bats and Spiders – Craft stores everywhere carry plastic bats and spiders during the Halloween season. If you have trees in your front yard anywhere, hang these decorations all over them with clear fishing line. You can add an extra touch to the spiders by putting a bunch of the spider web decorations in the tree branches along with the spiders. You can also find strings of bat and spider lights, which are exactly like Christmas lights. These make fun additions to your decoration repertoire.

Illumination Bags – Not only are these great decorations, but they keep the trick-or-treaters safe. Bags with little lights or candles inside will light the way to your front yard, helping the eager kids avoid falls. Look for safe instructions to make your own or buy them in bulk to line your driveway and sidewalk.

How you decorate and what you decorate with are really up to you. You don't have to spend a lot of money to make your front area attractive to those trick-or-treaters who might be visiting.

    The Quinceanera Party

    Writen by Elizabeth Cuadrado

A quinceanera party is given to celebrate a young girl's coming of age. This takes place when a girl reaches the age of 15, otherwise known as her quince anos in Spanish. Many hispanic cultures follow this tradition. It involves a mass in the girl's honor as well as a ball style celebration.

A quinceanera party can be as elaborate as a wedding reception. The amount of money spent on this celebration depends on the social class of the family. Yet, most quinceanera parties cost an average of $5,000 to $10,000. Quinceanera parties are planned months in advance. The quinceanera party is usually held at a home or banquet hall. The party includes lots of food, a beautiful cake, and dancing. Many times, a choreographed waltz is performed by the quinceanera and her court. Her court if made up of 14 other people making it 15 with her.

On this special day, the quinceanera girl looks and is treated as a princess by her family and friends. She wears a gorgeous gown, high heels and a tiara. The high heels are put on her by her father while she is crowned like a princess by her mother.

Just like weddings, quinceanera parties usually follow a theme. The decorations and quinceanera favors are chosen accordingly. Some popular themes for quinceaneras parties include: a traditional theme, a princess theme, a mascarade ball, a Hawaiian theme, a garden theme, a butterfly theme, a black and white party theme, a Brazilian theme, and many more.

The quinceanera party is a very important and happy occasion in the life of a young latin girl. It is an event that she will treasure throughout her lifetime.

    30th Birthday Gift Ideas

    Writen by Kathy Burns-Millyard

Let's be real here. Turning thirty does not qualify someone as being over the hill. Sure, it might be a difficult milestone for some (particularly some women!). It is indeed a time of change. Unlike the previous decade that was filled with carefree college antics, youthful energy and wild moments, hitting the thirties means a fully-charged career, kids and a whole lot of serious issues to deal with - like finances and taxes. For many, turning thirty is coming to grips with the fact that they will never be twenty-something again. But still, the thirtieth birthday shouldn't be denoted by black balloons and gag gifts. It should be marked by a whimsical celebration! Thirty is truly when one becomes a "young adult." So if you know someone who is quickly approaching this magnificent milestone, here are some gift ideas to celebrate their birthday in a light hearted way:

Personalized Share of Starbucks: They've spent half their life hanging out there, so why not give them their own little piece of Starbucks? Visit Oneshare.com to buy them a share of this international coffee empire. You'll receive a personalized framed copy of their stock certificate, which they can proudly display on their home or office wall. Include a quote like Building Your Financial Freedom One Cup at a Time or add your own. You'll be buying them a little piece of retail history.

Kayaking Experience: Whether they know how to kayak or not, they'll love the adventure of taking on the wild rapids! Look for daily or weekend kayaking excursions in your local area. Go online or check your yellow pages for canoe and kayak trips and classes.

Blast from the Past Board Game: Give them a chance to take a trip back through the 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's and test their nostalgic memory. This is a fun-filled gift that will give hours upon hours of laughs. You recipient will be surprised how much they remember! And how much they want to forget!

TV Series on Video or DVD: If they're really hooked on a certain television show or if they used to be hooked on one, here's a terrific gift that they're sure to enjoy: buy them an entire season of their favorite show on video or DVD! Some ideas are The Dukes of Hazzard, Dallas, Nip/Tuck, the West Wing, ER, Everybody Loves Raymond, Friends or Sex and the City.

Bookstore Gift Certificate: Gift certificates are the perfect solution when you can't seem to find the right gift. For someone just turning thirty, an appropriate selection is the gift of reading. So opt for a gift certificate to the corner bookstore or the behemoth of them all, Amazon.

    Tips For Successful Holiday Planning

    Writen by Tom Palange

Thanksgiving is a holiday for families and football, and a lot of hard work and money goes into preparing the feast! As the host of your family's Thanksgiving dinner try planning ahead this year.
Use these tips to help you save yourself some headaches and money:

    Watch for supermarket loyalty programs.
Many supermarkets offer special incentive programs around the holidays that can earn you free groceries. Read your local newspaper and check the weekend circulars, and be sure to capitalize on the chance to earn free Thanksgiving turkeys!

    Check wholesalers for better bargains.
For every day items and groceries, wholesalers don't offer the lowest prices. Many families however, hold multiple holiday parties from Thanksgiving through New Year's Eve. If you're hosting multiple parties this year, buy in bulk from Sam's Club, BJ's or Costco; you'll get more items for a cheaper price.

    Vary your shopping.
Supermarkets recognize that consumers plan ahead for their holiday dinners. Stay on top of the weekly specials at various supermarkets in your area. You may save money on one item at a store this week and more money on another item a few weeks later.

    Outsource your courses.
As host of the party, it is your job to cook, clean, decorate, prepare and entertain. Ask your guests to pitch in this year by bringing a side dish to Thanksgiving dinner. If you're cooking the turkey, stuffing and desserts, relatives will be more than happy to bring the potatoes, vegetables or cranberry sauce!

Pumpkin Power Superfood Virtues Beyond Pumpkin Carving

    Writen by Sylvia Riley

Pumpkin is at the heart of Halloween festivities, and for many is the only experience they have of the squash all season. This is usually for the joys of pumpkin carving rather than cooking. When you discover just how healthy pumpkins are however, you'll realise that pumpkin recipes are just as worth getting excited about and that it would be foolish not to eat the remaining flesh left over from your pumpkin carving. (As a note, if you're rolling up your sleeves ready to tackle your orange fellow there are plenty of free pumpkin carving pattern ideas available on the internet).

Pumpkin is a superfood indeed. In fact, it's not just the inner meat of a pumpkin that's virtuous but its seeds are super nutritous too and contain a wealth of health-promoting properties. Like melons, cucumber, and squash, pumpkins belong to the gourd family. They were much celebrated by Native American Indians who made use of their flesh and seeds for culinary and medicinal purposes. Pumpkin flesh is high in fibre and vitamins C and E, magnesium and potassium and a staggering quantity and variety of carotenoids, being one of the most abundant natural sources of these amazing phytonutrients.

Dietary carotenoids correlate with lower a risk of numerous cancers, heart disease, cataracts and blindness. Pumpkin contains heaps of beta-carotene as well as a huge concentration of alpha-carotene, with just a quarter of a cup yielding the recommended daily amount. Alpha-carotene protects against certain cancers and cataracts, and has also been discovered to be a powerful ally against aging.

Both alpha- and beta-carotene can be converted into vitamin A within the body, which plays an essential role in growth, development and immunity. Beta-carotene is a potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent and prevents cholesterol build up in blood vessels that could lead to stroke or heart attack. The presence of magnesium, potassium and folate in pumpkin heightens its heart-friendly attributes. Beta-carotene works most effectively in combination with other carotenoids and has been found to reduce the risk of lung and colon cancer in particular.

When exploring pumpkin recipes experiment with other squashes too. There are numerous types in all shapes and sizes with many similar nutritional values. One tasty alternative is the butternut squash.

Pumpkins yield delicious and highly nutritious seeds. Known as pepitas, they are dark green and flat with a chewy texture and rich nutty flavour. These seeds are dense in minerals, with just a quarter of a cup providing approximately half the daily recommended dose for magnesium and iron, in addition to high doses of zinc, phosphorous, potassium, selenium, manganese and copper. They also contain the amino acid tryptophan known for anti-depressant qualities, and essential fatty acids.

The dark green oil produced from pumpkin seeds has been used throughout history in India, Europe and America to fight parasites, aid the digestive tract and help with prostate and reproductive disorders. It has also been recommended for pregnant and lactating women because of its high content of essential fatty acids.

Pumpkin seeds have been found to help prevent against prostate gland enlargement due to the chemical substances called cucurbitacins it contains. The essential fatty acids in pumpkin seeds are also necessary for prostate health, and zinc (which pumpkin seeds are especially high in) is great for the reproductive systems and has been shown to reduce prostate size.

The L-tryptophan in pumpkin seeds is known to have anti-depressant properties, so it is suggested eating them can elevate your mood. Pumpkin seeds also contain omega-3 fatty acids known for their role in improving mental function, alleviating depression and aiding memory. Both the omega-3 and omega-6 essential fatty acids in pumpkin seeds have a broad range of health functions in the body.

So, for a smashing pumpkin Halloween, as well enjoying carving pumpkins, check out some tasty pumpkin recipes so you can benefit from the super healthy flesh of your pumpkin carving remains, and throw a handful of pumpkin seeds on top for that extra nutritional boost!
