Printable Birthday Invitations

Writen by Richard Romando

At the height of preparations for a birthday party, it is so easy to forget details, even on the information you write on the invitation cards. You can overlook the date or time or forget to place the exact venue or what to wear. And anyone who has ever organized a party can tell you that can spell disaster. Don't let small details ruin your plans.

There are software programs for printing standard invitation cards. These are perfect when you are in a rush and under a strict budget, and if you are only inviting close friends and family. They don't need fancy invites to come to your party. The templates are exciting, too, and you are mostly likely to find what you need from the myriad of choices available. You can print the invitation in portrait or landscape mode, bi-fold or triple-fold.

Desktop publishing of birthday party invitations can also give you the flexibility to produce the smallest amount you need. What's more, depending on your printer, you can use any kind of paper you want. If you just give it a little more attention, you may even come out with a more professional invitation card. Accessorize your printable birthday invitation with ribbons or sequins or cut-outs. To add a touch of simple elegance, accent the card with dried flowers and spray it with perfume. You may also add fillers with additional information about the celebrator or you can put the entire list of activities guests can expect at the party.

Inviting relatives or friends from another state? You don't have to worry about the logistics of sending the invitations to them. Distribution of the invites may not be a problem at all. If you do not want to use snail mail, try e-mailing the card to one individual who can print the card and send copies to the rest.

Maintaining Good Health Habits Over The Holidays

Writen by Jonna Reynolds

Q: I've worked so hard in the last few months. How can I make sure that I don't blow it over the holidays? I really want to stick to my mindful eating- but there is so much good food around!

A: The first step is to make a decision that you will not allow the holiday's to get in the way. Choose to make a commitment to yourself right now. Set specific goals to maintain for the rest of the month.

To stick to your exercise plan, choose how much you would like to exercise (ex. 4 times a week for 45 min- cardio, plus 3x week 30 min of strength). Then give yourself choices of activities- be flexible.

Block out the time on your calendar for your fitness appointments and stick to them. Think of creative ways squeeze in exercise to your day during the holidays. Can a walk with your mom count as exercise? Can you turn christmas shopping into a workout?

As for food, continue to focus on your mindful eating rules. You can eat those great foods that you only get this time of year, but pick and choose. Only eat those that are your favorites, when you are truly hungry, enjoy them fully, and stop when you are satisfied- NOT when you are full.

Want to have the capacity to eat more of those great foods? Add in extra workouts- they will make you even MORE hungry!

Watch the alcohol intake, especially where good foods are present. A few drinks will lower your inhibition and your ability to eat mindfully. If you choose to drink, try to do so far away from the food.

Choose to make this a priority for yourself this holiday season. Commit yourself to it and determine what you can reward yourself with once you make it through this difficult month. Your body and your health are important to you- don't blow it by not paying attention!

Halloween Festival

Writen by Usharani Vairam

History of Halloween, like any other festival's history is stimulated through civilization that has emerged through all ages from one generation to other generation and you can follow your previous generations as they did. Most of their innovation gets fuzzy with additions and alterations as this process goes on. It happens so slowly, straddling over so many ages, that we barely come to be familiar with about these deformations. At one point of time it leaves us puzzled, with its multihued faces. Digging more into its history assists to sieve out the facts from the fantasies which caught us unaware. The history of Halloween Day, as culled from the net, is being described here in this light. This is to help out those who are interested in washing off the superficial hues to reach the core and know things as they truly are. 'Trick or treat' may be an innocent fun to enjoy on the Halloween Day. But just think about a bunch of terrifying fantasies and the scary stories featuring ghosts, witches, monsters, evils, elves and animal sacrifices associated with it.

Halloween is a ceremonial celebrated on the night of October 31, most exceptionally by children dressing in diverse as well as striking costumes and going door-to-door collecting sweets or money. It is notorious in most of the Western world, though most common in the United States, Puerto Rico, Ireland, the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia, Irish, Scots and other refugees brought grown-up versions of the custom to North America in the 19th century. The holiday was a day of religious festivities in assorted northern European pagan traditions, until it was appropriated by Christian missionaries and given a Christian interpretation. In Mexico November 1st and 2nd are celebrated as the Day of the Dead. In Great Britain and Ireland, the pagan Celts celebrated the Day of the Dead on All Hallows Day (1st November). To scare off the evil spirits, the Celts wore masks. When the Romans invaded Great Britain, they exaggerated the ritual with their own, which is both a celebration of the yield and of honoring the dead. Halloween is sometimes associated with the occult.

Many European cultural traditions hold that Halloween is one of the liminal times of the year when the spiritual world can make contact with with the physical world and when magic is most effective. One story says that, on the day of Halloween, the ethereal feelings of all those who had died throughout the preceding year would come back in search of living bodies to hold for the next year. The Celts alleged all laws of space and time were suspended during this time, permitting the spirit world to amalgamate with the living. Naturally, the still-living did not want to be haunted. So on the night of October 31, villagers would snuff out the fires in their homes, to make them cold and detrimental. They would dress up in all modes of ghoulish costumes and raucously paraded around the neighborhood, being as caustic as possible in order to frighten away spirits looking for bodies to possess.

How To Make Kid Costume From A Trash Bag

Writen by Patricia Jensen

What could be quicker and easier than creating a kids Halloween costume from a trash bag?

Every Halloween, my son Tyler's swim team holds a contest for the best costume made from a trash bag. Of course, the idea is that the kids can jump into the pool and swim with their costumes on! (They don't get tangled or pulled under in their lightweight trash bag creations.)

Here's how to make kid costume trash bag: First, take a large trash bag and cut a head hole in the closed bottom end of the bag.

Tip: It will be easier to get over the head if you cut a 4-5 inch slit off one side of the circle.

Now, get creative. Use different kinds of tape and/or Sharpie markers to make a unique design, an object, or a work of art.

Here are some examples to get you started:

BULLSEYE This year, my son Tyler dressed as a bullseye. We simply made concentric circles of different colored electrical tape in the center of the trash bag.

The crowning touch was an arrow-through-the-head prop I purchased at the local costume supply store!

HERSHEY'S CHOCOLATE BAR Tyler's friend came as a giant Hershey bar. Her very artistic Dad spelled out the word "Hershey's" on a dark colored bag using lots and lots of white tape.

The result was a costume bearing a remarkable resemblance to an authentic larger-than-life Hershey's chocolate bar!

Other Trash Bag Costume Ideas: HERSHEY'S KISS - Make two leg holes in the bottom of the bag instead of a head hole. Cut an arm hole in each side too. Have your child step into the bag and put her arms through the arm holes.

Bunch up some small plastic bags and place in the bottom of the bag to add some bulk - this is the wider bottom of the "kiss". Gather the top of the bag around her neck and loosely tie.

Cut a long strip from a white plastic trash bag and write the word "Hershey's" in large block letters with an indelible black marker. Pin to your child's hair and let it dangle.

BAG OF JELLYBEANS -This costume requires a large clear trashbag. Prepare the bag as for Hershey Kiss with two leg holes in the bottom and arm holes on each side. Have your child step into the bag and put her arms through the arm holes.

Fill the bag with an assortment of small multi-colored inflated balloons. Gather the top of the bag around her neck and loosely tie.

HUMAN CALCULATOR - Apply squares of duct tape to the trash bag to resemble a large calculator. Write the appropriate numbers 0-9 on the tape squares.

Don't forget the function keys for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, ON, OFF, ENTER, etc.

CELL PHONE - Same as the calculator, just change the number key configuration and add ENTER, END, OK, and the other appropriate keys found on a cell phone keypad.

Party Gifts For Your Next Event

Writen by Gail Leino

Sometimes the best gift to give someone at their next party is a party gift associated with the theme of the event. Guests love it when the party hosts go through with the bother of creating a party theme and remaining consistent, maybe the guests could do a little something to help continue that theme. Bringing an appropriately themed gift to the party is a perfect way to do just that.

Its traditional to bring gifts to birthday parties, a themed birthday party makes it even easier to pick out the right gift. If you are going to a kid's Barbie themed party go ahead and pick up a plastic Barbie Treasure Kit carrying case. This kit is filled with lots of Barbie stickers and a sticker album for the owner to fill up with their own collection of Barbie stickers. Little kids are very big on stickers so this will be the perfect party gift.

If someone is holding a Casino or Poker themed party then you can really get into that theme with a party gift. Party hosts will appreciate a Casino themed neon lamp in the shape of a hand of playing cards. You can bring other nifty neon lights to the party too. A palm tree lamp is cool or an eight inch lamp shaped like a traffic light with the red, yellow and green lights.

Other cool gifts for kid's parties include the Airzooka, which is exactly what it sounds like. It's a look funnel device that expels a powerful rush of air. Kids can use it to blow out the candles on their birthday cakes from across the room.

Fun smaller gifts to take over to your friend's super bowl party include a pair of team centered wraparound sunglasses. These are sunglasses with the logo of a certain football team printed on the side of the frames. There are Falcons glasses, Dallas, Giants, Dolphins and more.

Healthy Halloween

Writen by Jolanda Garcia

These two words don't traditionally go together. Boo! Trick or Treat! Those are the usual words we'll be hearing on Halloween, as our little witches, superheroes, and vampires knock on the neighbor's doors for treats. Treats are a part of the tradition, but for many parents the most frightening thing about Halloween is how to deal with the avalanche of candy that comes into the home on Halloween.

Here are some simple strategies to use before and after trick-or-treating.

- Make sure children eat a meal or snack before going trick-or-treating so they won't be tempted to dig into their bag of goodies before they get home.

- When children get home, check the treats and keep only the treats that are in their original wrappers.

- Eat trick-or-treat candy over several days as a substitute for dessert or a few pieces along with a healthy snack.

- Keep holiday candy until the next holiday, such as Thanksgiving.

-Ration the amount of Halloween candy a child eats at one time.

- Place a small amount of candy in a plastic bag for a special treat.

- Freeze the chocolate bars to save them for later. Frozen chocolate takes longer to eat, so children can't eat them so quickly.

- Trade candy bars or certain amount of candy for small trinkets, Halloween toys and novelties, Barrettes, hair bows, ribbons, jewelry, Action figures, or for a movie or video.

- Make an art project with your Halloween candy. Paint sturdy paper plate and use glue and leftover candy to decorate the plate. This makes a great art piece. Visit www.KidsSoup.com for more ideas.

- For small children - Leave it for The Great Jack-O 'Lantern. Tell a story of The Great Jack-O 'Lantern and pour all the excess and unwanted candy in a special Jack-O 'Lantern and leave it outside for The Great Jack-O 'Lantern to take and share with all the poor children that didn't get candy on Halloween.

What has been a nutritional and dental nightmare can, with a little creativity and planning, remain one of the favorite celebrations of children and parents alike. Have a Healthy Happy Halloween! I'll trade you a tootsie roll for a periwinkle barrette.

Christmas Towers A Beautiful Gift Design For The Holidays

Writen by Anne Clarke

It does not matter for whom, because of the variety of Christmas gift towers you can create to suit the personal taste of anyone you know.

Here are a couple of examples for the uses of Christmas gift towers:

- Christmas gift towers as gifts for individuals:

- The Christmas gift towers designed for individuals can be inexpensive or absolutely luxurious, containing expensive items stacked one upon the other. Depending on whom this Christmas gift tower is for, you can find the best gift to put in each box.

For example:

If it is a gift for a child you can stack the larger presents on the bottom (obviously) such as large stuffed animals, blankets, slippers etc. And then build your Christmas gift towers with smaller and smaller items until you reach the top. For instance, the smallest box could be mini toy cars, or Barbie accessories.

- Christmas towers for groups of people:

- Christmas gift towers can be the easiest answer for you if you are trying to find a great present for a family or another small group of people.

For example:

Let's pretend you are looking for a special Christmas gift for a family you know. There are five members of this family—three of whom are children and two, the mother and father. Furthermore, let's just say that the youngest is two years old.

The largest box could be for the parents, perhaps a new DVD player or a cappuccino maker, or even a small wine rack. The second largest box can be a big stuffed animal for the two year old. The next box needs something smaller, how about a little jewelry or make-up set for the little girl, and the top box could be an action figure or toy cars for the little boy.

Here are a couple of ideas for the presentation of Christmas gift towers:

- Christmas gift towers are beautifully designed. Often they are a lovely addition to your Christmas décor as they sit under the tree.

- When you search online you will find that many online gift stores will wrap your Christmas gift towers for you.

- You will also find that Christmas gift towers come in many different themes, color schemes etc., so you will never be disappointed with the Christmas gift towers' presentation. Christmas gift towers are not eyesores. In fact they are quite the opposite. Look around online and find the very best Christmas gift towers for you to give away this Christmas

How Can You Forget About Forgetting Birthdays Three Easy Ways To Remember Birthdays

Writen by Sean Carter

Remembering someone's birthday is the easiest way to make someone feel special but often it's the most difficult thing to do. The only birthday we tend to remember without much difficulty is our own! Birthday is one of those wonderful occasions on which everybody wants to get a little pampered and spoiled but if you don't even remember that it's the birthday of some one close to you, well...obviously he won't feel very good about it.

How would you feel, if you expect someone to wish you on your birthday and you end up knowing that he or she doesn't even bother to remember that day. It's certainly a nice sensation to receive loads of birthday wishes from friends and family members; it makes you feel loved and cared for. Wishing some one happy birthday or sending a nice little happy birthday ecard on that very day makes the birthday boy or girl glow in the warmth of love and affection. But what if with all your sincere love and longing you end up forgetting the birthday of your near and dear ones? A few simple steps can help you avoid such an awkward situation.

The conventional way of remembering birthday is what our grandparents have been doing for ages. All you need to do is keep a little note book. It's best if you can get hold of one of those tiny winy year planners. Just write down the name of your closest friends and family members, along with the date on which they were born and make a habit of checking the note book every three or four days. It's an excellent idea provided you remember checking out the note book regularly.

Another way of remembering birthday is quite similar to the former method but the new technology has made it a lot more easy. Simply install a reminder software and key in the birthday details that you want to remember and your computer will do the rest.

But if you don't want go in to all that hassle of working with a reminder-software, the best possible way to never regret for not remembering someone's birthday is to opt for an online free birthday ecard site, which lets you choose a specific future date to send the ecard. Some of the online free ecard sites have the option of assigning a post date on which the receiver will get the ecard in his or her inbox.

All you need to do once you visit the free ecard site, is to choose the birthday ecard that you think is ideal for that person; personalize the ecard with your warm and heartfelt birthday wish and then choose the date of that person's birthday, which can even be a month away and the free birthday ecard with your own personal message will be sent on that chosen date! You just sit in front of the computer once a month and send all those birthday wishes all at once and each one of them will receive your birthday ecard precisely on their birthday!

Now when he or she calls you up, all excited and thank you for remembering the date and making the birthday really special by sending the ecard right on the birthday, you can enjoy the feeling of making some one feel special and cheerful and all that with very little effort from your side.

Sean Carter writes on holidays, events and celebrations around the world. He is a writer with years of experience in different industries with specialized knowledge on ecard industry.

Salome And Herodias A Curious Mothers Day Story Part 2 Of 2 Parts

Writen by Barbara Nell

First, a disclaimer:

This article requires information about John the Baptist, whose life and works and words are holy, divinely inspired, to Christians. The sources I've accessed are religious, historical, literary, exegetic, and anecdotal. In order to avoid disrespect for the sacredness of the words and concepts with which Christians hold The Gospels and with which Jews hold The Torah, I've renamed both 'translated redactions.' I also use the euphemism, monotheistic god, to avoid any disrespect to any deity and religion. This is an essay designed to entertain and inform you, Dear Reader, not to cause any religious discussion or foment.

Second, a thank you:

To friend Pam and friend Vanessa, both of whom got my research juices going on Salome, whom, I believed, was trivial, too trivial even for our newsletter. It boiled down to "Who did she do the belly dance for?" I hadn't a clue, because I didn't think she was real. They both assured me she was a real person. I checked it out. Yup, she was real and... To discover how the belly dance became associated with Salome, we have to veer away from her. It's Herodias and John who carry the story line forward.

At the time of the banquet, Herodias was the 2nd wife of Antipas, and they had been married for about 10 years. (Antipas was the only father Salome had known.) Salome's biological father was Phillip, who was King of Judea, a large land mass, much larger than the area called The Galilee, and he and Herodias were divorced when Salome was about 1 year old. Herodias had been an important wife when Phillip was first made King by Rome because of her Maccabean blood. The Maccabees had been rulers of Judea long before Phillip came on board, but through a lot of circumstances, Judea was ruled by the Herod bunch and had accepted Rome's yoke by that time. The Maccabees were prolific (as was Herod The Great), and there was a large pool of eligible Maccabean women for rulers to marry. It was a stable region in Rome's empire. In any event, the divorce was with Rome's permission. Phillip was allowed to marry some one else with Rome's permission, and I didn't check out who. He never asked for visitation rights.

Some sources say Antipas first met Herodias when Herodias was on a trip to Rome with Phillip petitioning Rome for something or another at the same time that Antipas was in Rome (alone) petitioning Rome, yet again, for the title of King and more land from his father's estate, neither of which Rome never granted him in his lifetime. I don't think it matters how they met. They met, they talked, a deal was struck.

I don't know why Herodias left Queenship of Judea to become a Tetrarch's wife. There are always sources that attribute lust to this sort of situation, and these sources do arise in this story, some attributing lust to Herodias, others attributing lust to Antipas. Personally, I find lust a poor reason. A Queen, one of royal blood, just doesn't think lust. She thinks power and lineage. A tetrarch, although not as powerful as a King, doesn't have to go far from his little castle, even as far as Judea, to satisfy a lustful thought. An unhappy Tetrarch thinks power and lineage, too. Maybe it was her Maccabean blood and her Maccabean ties that Antipas thought would help him become a King of a landmass that included Judea, which her ancestors ruled before Rome put the Herods there. Maybe she thought The Galilee plus Judea is bigger than just Judea. Maybe she thought that The Galilee plus Arabia, which abutted The Galilee, is bigger than Judea should Antipas go to war for the Arabian territory. In any event, she left Phillip before the divorce (which came through quickly) and went to Antipas' puny area, The Galilee.

She also jumped the gun. Antipas was not yet rid of his first wife, Phasaelis, when Herodias and the baby arrived. And, he hadn't petitioned Rome to get rid of Phasaelis and marry Herodias. Although Phasaelis was a Princess by blood and the daughter of a powerful neighbor and King, Aretas IV of Nabatea (Arabia), Antipas decided to circumvent Rome by merely 'putting her aside,' an ignominy. This was not nice. Phasaelis went home to Poppa (and took the kids, if there were any with she and Antipas) who bided his time a bit, then attacked The Galilee, because of the dishonor.

Troops from all of Herod the Great's sons (half-brothers to a man) jumped in to help The Galilean troops, even Phillip (inherited family land was a big thing; a former wife was nothing) and Roman legions jumped in to help, too. But land was lost and that, by definition, means The Galileans lost the war. He never did divorce Phasaelis and she never returned to him.

Herodias stayed put and she and Antipas married (with Rome's permission, whose attitude toward provinces was very pragmatic: the war is over; they lost; let 'em marry; who gives a damn) and lived in a castle somewhere in The Galilee with the baby.

Antipas' reputation went from an annoying pest to miserable in Rome's eyes because of this double screw up (stupidly and unnecessarily dishonoring a neighbor's daughter thereby incurring an unnecessary troop expense on Rome's tab and loosing land to a King who was not conquered by Rome). He decided to Make It Better. Tiberius was now the Caesar and Antipas decided to build a city to honor him. He commandeered land in The Galilee and his construction people began building a city. But, Antipas and his building contractors either didn't do their homework, or if they did, they didn't think it through. The land upon which the city was being built was a cemetery, sacred ground to every person in the world then as well as today. There was an uprising amongst the folk that local troops could not quell. Again, Rome had to help Antipas out, for Judea wouldn't, since they sided with the people, not Antipas. The people were quelled and the city was built. It remained uninhabited. No one would go there to live no matter how sweet the pot Antipas created (free homes, free land, tax abatement). Rome had to send troops to forcibly move families to Tiberius and to guard them so they wouldn't move out in the dark of the night. Flavius Josephus liked this morsel a lot when he heard of it. He checked around and then comments that riff-raff were recruited to populate the city. He observes that even the riff-raff were afraid of the monotheistic god, so local holy people made a rule: the new settlers would only be defiled for 7 days, then everything would be okay.

And life went on in The Galilee.

John, during some of this, had been going about his business in The Galilee. One particular thing he did caught on amongst the folk. No one knew what to call it, so it had two different names: sprinkling and lave-ing, both of which were already accepted cleansing rites in most, if not all, religions before that time and during that time in that area and most of the known world. Water was always the cleansing agent and John used the nearby Jordan River as the sprinkling and lave-ing site. What John did was total body immersion, a new twist, one the people liked a lot, for it made sense to them and made them feel good and purified from sins committed previously. This total body immersion always occurred after John would talk about sinning and give definitions. He would call for penitents, people who wanted to cleanse themselves. They would step forward and get in a line, so he could do them one-by-one. He had set himself up as a person who knew what the monotheistic deity expected of good folk (mostly it was to stop acting like Romans and revert to the Galilean ways, the ones prevalent before Rome took over the area). While he was in prison and after his death, other people did the immersion for him. What he had said before he was imprisoned was credible to the folk.

But then, John was imprisoned and killed years after he was imprisoned.

Very soon a very lot of other things happened in The Galilee. These events were written down and pondered and interpreted by brilliant, eloquent, and sincere men, three of whom decided that John and what he said and his immersion twist was a ceremony that would be important to incorporate as a ritual for their testimonials. They were the redactors whose words have been translated and pondered for centuries. Their decision caused his death to be discussed (and his childhood, parents, vocation, inspiration, relationships, etc. to be determined) and this is how Herodias' name was never forgotten.

The earliest redactor, a stickler for details, had a problem with her daughter's name, when he read Flavius Josephus, who says 'a damsel, the daughter of Herodias, brought the head…' in his book to Rome. This was not good enough for him. He did some easy homework, for Herodias' royal lineage was known and available. He determined that Herodias' daughter was named Salome. This was not good homework. Herodias was Maccabean. No Maccabee, male or female, would ever name a child for a still living person, let alone the actual name of a relative, this case, a blood aunt, who was living at the time of her daughter's birth. But, it's all we have, so she must remain misnamed Salome (which means 'peace,' a nice touch, don't you think?) when John's beheading is talked about and when Herodias' progeny is included.

And this is how Salome and Herodias and John were tied together forever more. Many centuries have to pass by before the triangle comes into focus again. We have to wait for society to go from antiquity all the way to modern…at least 1,970 years or so. More specifically, we have to wait for a religion to formalize; we have to wait until John's contributions become important and incorporated; we have to wait for churches to be invented; we have to wait for representational art to be used for something other than decorative purposes; we have to allow for the Bubonic Plague interlude when absolutely nothing happened except the death of millions; we have to wait for literacy to occur; we have to wait for Gutenberg and his printing press; we have to wait for portraiture to be invented.

Once churches were invented, representational art was applied as a method to tell the stories to the illiterate devout people. The triangle story was not as popular as other stories, so it was represented only some times. The scene chosen was most always was when the plattercharger is proffered takes place. No one character of the triangle is more important that the other. It's the story behind the scene that's important, and that is John's death (but not as a martyr, I don't think, but I may be wrong). Typical friezes and frescos from churches in the early 14th show the scene with figures that are medieval in demeanor and costume. That's what the medieval people needed; that's what they got. Their eyes could roam the church for something to center on, if their attention drifted from the devotions at hand.

Everything gets pretty quiet everywhere, beginning 1330, when the first Bubonic Plague episode begins and we have to wait a long time, about 150 years, for normalcy to occur.

In 1485, the beheading surfaces. Portraiture had been invented by then, and art has gone into homes of wealthy people, who ask artists to do pictures for them, often of them and their family members. One type of portraiture allowed the viewer to be a voyeur, to glimpse an intimate scene, a freeze frame, if you will, from a larger story, if the artist was good. Religious art was a popular theme. The artist selected the motif and there was a lot of symbolism to get the whole story line into the canvas. It's Salome and the plattercharger that's chosen, when this subject is chosen at all, and truth be told, it's lousy, static portraiture. She's not portrayed as a child, but she's not portrayed as a woman, either. "Damsel," was apparently interpreted as that twilight zone a female has between childhood and woman. I don't know why the subject matter was chosen by the patron or the artist, who apparently just couldn't get into 'it.' I guess my opinion was shared by the patrons from 500+ years back, for this theme dies out.

John and his sainthood, not his death or Herodias or Salome, become the theme of most art, and we have to wait until 1630 to find the others of the triangle depicted again.

In 1630, a blockbuster piece of art is produced (my opinion) that asks you to consider Herodias, not John. It's my absolute favorite, by a guy named Francesco del Cairo, "Herodias with Head of John the Baptist." It is so different from all others than came before (and after). Is she exhausted, meditative, musing, or in a trance? A closer look might surprise you. Could she possibly be holding his tongue while on the verge of stroking his hair? I believe she is. What could del Cairo have been thinking? What is he asking us to believe about Herodias? Frankly, I don't wanna go there. No one else did either, for depictions of Herodias (and Salome) simply stop until the 1800's and John in his sainthood continue...with one exception.

In 1732, Giovanni Battista does a picture of the actual beheading at the fortress site, which I think is worthwhile to mention for its interesting consideration. Could that be Antipas, the doodle-head, Battista places in the scene? Perhaps. I think Battista's got a neat mind. No one else did. This theme is not picked up either.

We have to close the books on artwork at this point in time, jump about one hundred years forward. Because of a single painting of Herodias by Paul Delaroche in 1843, it's the literary arts, the poets and authors and playwrights, who pick up the story and fiction supercedes reality. Herodias, first, and Salome, next, sans John, are the motifs for the first time. They move from real people to fictional characters.

Delaroche shows Herodias as exotic (read, non-European) (The euphemism used for most any type non-European at that time was Occidental.), regal (He did his homework.), authentically dressed (more good homework), and very, very lovely. The look on her face is open to interpretation. Has the grotesque event occurred or not yet? Is she serene or is she challenging us to question her? I don't know who is represented in the background, for it certainly cannot be Salome. Herodias is a person in her own right. I would like to tie Delaroche's interpretation to having viewed del Cairo (although I don't know if this occurred, not having the resources to track the provenance of the del Cairo picture to align its location with Delaroche's life).

Apparently Heinrich Heine, a German poet of some renown, was enchanted by the picture. He wrote a poem in 1843, "Atta Troll," which sources say is a mock epic about Herodias. I was unable to find an English translation, so I have to accept what sources say as true. What I do know is that an epic is a very long and twisted story (the Iliad and the Odyssey are epics) about fanciful adventures of a protagonist (usually heroic) in pursuit of good end. How Heine got enough ideas about Herodias, who was arcane by this time, to go on and on about her pursuit of an end, good or not good, I don't know. I guess that's called talent. In any event, he catapults Herodias (and the triangle) back into the minds of artistic people and they make her (and the triangle) interesting enough for public contemplation.

This mock epic and Delaroche's painting next enchanted Stephane Mallarme, another poet of some renown, a Frenchman. He got his juices flowing and wrote a poem in 1869, "Herodiade," whose English translation I was unable to find. I have absolutely no idea what his poem says. Critics say she described sultry (for the first time). I have to believe that Mallarme associated Occidental with sultry, not an uncommon association amongst fanciful European guys. Herodias is changing to heroic (maybe if Heine's epic shows her to be this), Occidental, and sultry (read sexy).

All this got a French artist (of some renown) all excited. Gustave Moreau pondered the triangle and centered on Salome, instead of Herodias. He figured if Herodias was sultry, then Salome was more sultry. I don't know why, but that's what he did. He worked and worked this theme and ended up with a bunch of pictures with her as the (undressed) focal point, a first in Salome's depictions, and threw in John's head to make it all understandable. They were finished in 1876. All are amazing. The very last time Salome was the chosen subject matter was in 16th century (bad) portraiture. She's always holding the plattercharger and has a boring look on her face and is all dressed up in 16th century costume. What the hell did Heine's mock epic and Mallarme's poem allude to with regard to Salome? I don't know.

Anyway, Gustave Flaubert, a French writer of some renown, apparently read Heine and Mallarme and saw the picture interpretations of Delaroche and Moreau. All inspired him to write a short story in 1877 about Herodias, which indicates excellent homework, by the way. This, I read, and in this short story, she is called a Jezebel, albeit an aging one, for the first time. Her daughter is described as resembling her mother in her youth. You can read it, too. Go to http://www.classicbookshelf.com/library/gustave_flaubert/herodias/0/. It's now fictional open season on Herodias and by association, her daughter, Salome.

Then came Joris-Karl Huysman, who liked what Heine, Mallarme, and Flaubert wrote and liked Delaroche's and Moreau's pictures. He went with Salome, not Herodias, in 1884, for his essay, "Against the Grain." The essay is really prose poetry in the style of "The Song of Solomon," real, real sexy. The essay was labeled decadent after it was published. You can read it, too, if and when you get in the mood for 19th century decadence. Go to http://www.imagi-nation.com/moonstruck/salome1.html.

In the 19th century, certain people loved decadent stuff, especially the artistic types who felt stultified with conservative stuff and who felt they had to push the envelope of public taste. This decadent Salome idea percolated for ten years in Oscar Wilde's mind before his play, "Salome," was performed in 1893. An interesting touch was his collaboration with Aubrey Beardsley to do playbill artwork. Wilde was jailed it was so damn decadent.

Within a year after Wilde's play, Beardsley came out with a folio of images of Salome. It's racy for the bare breasts and belly button, but it's also a curiously clunky, non-sexy posing of Salome. Why is her midriff covered? Why is she wearing high heeled shoes with bows at the ankle? What the hell is going on here? Mere titillation, nothing more. Shame on you Beardsley.

Everything rested until 1905, when Richard Strauss, a German of music renown, chose Salome as his opera subject. His librettist, Hugo von Hofmannsthal, an Austrian poet of some renown, put words to the decadent musical motifs. A costume designer, whose name I could not find, turned her eastern Byzantine and gave her a harem twist and a costume of 7 veils. A choreographer had her shimmy (belly dance). In the first performance of "Salome,' Marie Wittich, described as an ample soprano Salome, refused to do the dance or wear the costume. A nameless ballerina accommodated the scene and this became a tradition each time the opera was performed. One critic, a word wizard, called Strauss the apostle of decadence. This made the people want to see it for themselves. Strauss' "Salome" was performed 50 times in the first two years after it was written in opera houses all over the world.

This chronicle has ended.

PS. A beheaded John, not yet a saint, is so very popular that I had to find a depiction of John with his head on. Caravaggio was quite taken with him and did a lot of versions of John with his head on.

Valentines Day Gifts Gifts That They Will Love

Writen by Nicola Kennedy

Are you tired of giving and receiving all the same old boring gifts for Valentine's Day? If you are like many people, you get the same basic things each year including candy, flowers, some underwear. But, you don't have to have such a boring Valentine's.

Use these tips not only for Valentine's Day but for every time that you need to purchase a gift for your loved ones. This year, you'll be bragging at work about what you got and they didn't get!

* Pay attention on shopping trips. This is a good tip for the guys. Watch what she looks at and seems to like. What books, what type of kitchen product would she like, or what type of movie does she enjoy? If she won't buy it for herself, it's up to you to make sure that she gets it. Ladies should do the same things. What projects does he like to do and what does he need to do them? What sports items would he enjoy? What does he look at in the store?

* Gift Basket Ideas for the ladies. This is a great way to spoil her a little. For the cook in the family, go with gadgets that she loves and needs, things like ergonomically correct vegetable peelers and beautiful napkin rings are great. Fill the basket with an apron and maybe a cookbook too. For the girl that needs pampering, fill a basket with bath and body products. Make sure to know the scent that she enjoys though and then fill the basket with all sorts of things that she would love such as bath salts, lotions, add in a nice luxury robe for her too. For the craft lover, go with a basket filled with all the things at the craft store that she needs. Great scissors, papers, and fabric that she would love. How about a manicure gift basket that is filled with nail polish, filers, clippers and a wide range of cosmetic items. You can often purchase a gift basket filled with all that is needed too.

* Coffee and tea gift baskets. This would work well for both the guys and the girls that love coffee. Fill it with a coffee mug or a tea cup with a wide range of teas that they would like. Line it with a beautiful cloth and then add flavored coffees, gourmets and even some decadent candies to go with it.

* Wine. For the wine lover, create a gift basket with their favorite wines, wine glasses, and some good quality cheeses and crackers. Perhaps add a bouquet of flowers to it as well.

* The Sports Guy. If you have a guy that loves sports, you can create the perfect gift for him. If you have a fisherman, for example, give him the things he needs such as hooks, fishing line, and accessories. Make sure to purchase what the will use and if you don't know, ask the salesman for help. For the hunter, things like camouflage gear, binoculars, heavy socks and sunglasses are necessary. Add to them whatever else he may need. For the golfer, give him new golf balls, gloves and maybe even the membership to the local club.

Any of these gifts could be the perfect gift for the loved one in your life. Think about what they would like, what they would enjoy and then find a way to make it personal for them. Purchasing gifts that work well for them will be gifts that they appreciate that much more.

Tips For Funfilled Trickortreating For Your Kids

Writen by Susanne Myers

What's a child's favorite part of Halloween? Going trick-or-treating, of course. What could be more fun than dressing up, and then walking from door to door collecting plenty of candy along the way? Best of all, this fun tradition takes place at night. Make this the most fun trick-or-treating experience for your child with these simple tips.

Location, Location, Location
Pick a good neighborhood with plenty of people who are prepared for and welcome trick-or-treaters. If you are new in the area, talk to other parents in your neighborhood about where to go trick-or-treating. Usually neighborhoods or subdivisions that decorate a lot are a good choice as well.

Chaperone
You may be tempted to send older children out on their own to Trick-or-Treat, but unless you know everyone on the street they are walking on, and have them go in a group, it's just not a safe option. Instead, send at least one adult along with them. Having an adult will make sure the trick-or-treating stays a fun experience for your children.

Trick-or-Treat in a Group
Kids have even more fun trick-or-treating if they get to run around in a group. Get a few families in the neighborhood together, or ask the cousins over to go trick-or-treating with you and your kids. Just make sure you bring several adults, especially if the kids are young, to keep up with everyone.

Don't Overdo It
Start early, right at or even before dusk and don't overdo the trick-or-treating. How long you end up trick-or-treating will of course depend on the age of your children. Just keep an eye on how they are doing and take them home when they start getting tired. The whole evening will be more memorable if you end it on a good note.

Would you like to quickly make creative Halloween costumes that you and your children will be proud of -- for a fraction of the price of store-bought? Susanne Myers has co-authored a book to show you how -- no sewing involved. Visit http://www.ILoveHalloweenCostumes.com to learn more.

Ultimate Army Themed Games Amp Activities For Your Childs Birthday Party

Writen by Geoff Schurman

Are you looking for the Ultimate Army Themed Party Games and Activities? Well stop looking because they are right here...

Good Luck and happy reading...

"Water Brigade" For their first high priority assignment, your unit must put out a fire that is destroying civilian crops! Divide the soldiers into two teams; line the teams up next to each other. Put a bucket full of water at the head of each line and give the first person in each line a large cup full of water. Place an empty bucket for each team about 35 ft away. Blow a whistle or say "GO!" the first person runs to the empty bucket, pours the water into it, and races back to their team with the empty cup. They should pass off the cup to the next teammate who fills the cup, runs to the bucket, pours the water in it and brings the cup back for the next player. When each team member has run down and back the game is over. To see which team has carried the most water down, insert sticks into each bucket and compare the water lines.

"Drill Sergeant Says" This is a simple game of Simon with a twist of Army. Next you are going to need a Drill Sergeant. Any volunteers? Oh yes, we have the honorary Mom and Dad. Try and dress up with a hat, sunglasses and shaved head. To play the game, the Drill Sergeant will give commands like: Drill Sergeant Says run for 10 seconds! You can have them respond with a Yes Drill Sergeant. If the Drill Sergeant didn't say "Drill Sergeant Says" and a few kids keep doing the commands, they have to go down for a few pushups. This really gives the kids the feel of Army-like drills!!

"Pack Up Relay" Find or borrow full size backpacks and things that would go inside (canteens, compass, pack of food, plate, etc). You will need one pack per team and one item per person. Have the teams line up with their pack. The first person must run to the pile of item #1 with the pack on, take the pack off, put the item into the pack, put the pack back on and run back to their team. Continue this until each child has picked up at least one item. The kids will love this game because they get to work as a team.

"Missing In Action (MIA)" Hide plastic Army Men outside and inform your soldiers that there are some fellows Soldiers Missing In Action. Send your soldiers out on a Top Secret Mission to locate and bring back as many plastic Army Men as they can find. You can keep score by how many they bring back.

"The Balloon Pop" This is a perfect game to get the kids to interact with each other more. Before the party, blow up a bunch of balloons and put a piece of paper inside that has different instructions, such as, "Do 10 Push-ups", "Run 2 Laps", "Do 15 Jumping Jacks", "Tell another soldier to do 15 Jumping Jacks", "Just got Promoted", etc. The kids will love the anticipation of popping a balloon and finding out what their orders are. Have fun and be creative.

"Rescue the Injured Soldier" Divide up the soldiers into two teams. Provide each team with a gurney (tarp or beach towel) and a roll of toilet paper. One person on the team will be the "Injured Soldier" and should be positioned about 40 yards from his teammates. When you say, "Go" the team runs across the yard to their injured soldier. They first wrap up the injured soldier in toilet paper, then transfer him to the gurney and finally transport him back to their starting position (I would suggest having one child hold a corner). This game is guaranteed to be loads of fun!

"Mine Field" Start out by placing a bunch of water balloons in the yard and blindfolding each soldier. Have them try and walk across the minefield without breaking any balloons.

"Grenade Toss" Before the party, construct some bean bags out of camo fabric and fill them up with rice. You could also purchase beanbags at your local party or fabric store. Place to cement blocks about 3 feet apart and place board on them. Next, setup of different types and sizes of pop bottles for the targets. Give the soldiers the beanbags and let them take aim. Try different distances to increase the difficulty.

"Water Grenade War" Begin by constructing two barricades for the children to hide behind (these can be made out of cardboard and spray painted for effect). Give the kids the balloons and watch the fun unfold before your eyes. Just remember, you can't have too many grenades!

"Obstacle Course" I would suggest placing this game last in your order of Birthday Party Games. This will be the most challenging and exciting. Here are few ideas on different obstacles you could incorporate into your Ultimate Course. Use a board as a plank to run across a water obstacle or between to cement blocks. Get some tires for the soldiers to step or run through. Use 5 gallon buckets with poles taped across for the soldiers to crawl under. Make some obstacles the soldiers can run and weave around, such as, garbage cans or buckets. Throw in some physical exercises like jumping jacks and pushups. While the soldiers are running through the obstacle, make sure you are acting just like a Drill Sergeant. There should be lots of yelling and encouragement. You could also be shooting a water gun at them or throwing water grenades. This should be the Ultimate game, so take your time designing the course and have fun!

Don't forget to check out the Ultimate Kid Birthday Parties website and submit your Kid Birthday Party ideas for a chance to win over $500 worth of prizes. The Grand Prize is a Sony Cybershot DSC-P93 Camera. Don't forget, because the contest ends 31 May 2005. Good Luck!!!

Making Heirloom Christmas Stockings Gifts To Treasure

Writen by Jen S Carter

The Christmas stocking is a wonderful tradition of the holidays. What would Christmas be like without that feeling on Christmas Eve when the children hang their stockings out for Santa Claus?

A Brief History of the Christmas Stocking

The Christmas stocking is a particularly enjoyable part of holiday celebrations and traditions. The practice of hanging up stockings is said to have originated with St. Nicholas. While trying to help a poor man who needed a dowry for his daughter, he tossed a bag of gold through the man's window. The bag landed in a young lady's stocking that was hung up to dry.

Others believe the practice of hanging Christmas stockings started in Holland. Children would leave their shoes outside to be filled with toys from Sinter Klaus. Over the years, the shoes (clogs) were replaced with stockings.

The beautifully crafted creations of today are a far cry from the socks of my own childhood - which are still used today by my children. Despite their misshapen, stretched and generally saddened condition, these stockings that they've had since childhood are brought out with glee each year by my children.

Why not create similar treasured gifts as presents for your friends and family this festive season?

Creating Heirloom Christmas Stockings

Handmade Christmas stockings are the stockings that are most cherished. There is nothing more wonderful than making or receiving a handmade Christmas stocking from a friend or relative. Handmade Christmas stockings can be knitted, cross-stitched, crocheted, embroidered, quilted or made from felt, silk, velvet, or other fabrics.

How to Make a Christmas Stocking

Craft stores and Internet sites sell Christmas stocking patterns or kits for you to use to make your own stockings.

Trace an existing Christmas stocking onto cardboard to use as a pattern. Add 1" all around for seams and 3" at the top to fold under. Felt is the most common material used because it does not ravel, so you don't need to hem it.

However, if you sew, you can use almost any material. You can pink the edges of felt for decoration or add colorful cuffs. A size 14 needle and 100% polyester thread works well. If you sew by hand, sew around at least twice for strength. Cut out two stockings using your pattern. Put the right sides together and sew around, except for the top. Trim the inside seams. Turn the stocking right-side-out. Turn the top 3" to the inside and sew in place. Add a loop for hanging. Decorate as you wish.

These personalized gifts will be treasured and carefully packed away after the Christmas season only to be brought out carefully each year.

Fake Smiles For The Holidays

Writen by Brian Kohlmeier

'Tis the season for… unwanted gifts?!

Whatever you celebrate throughout the winter holiday season (that's my stab at fitting into these politically correct times), there are plenty of gift exchanges going on. When it comes to gift giving our loved ones have good intentions, but sometimes they just don't get it right (a good poker face comes in handy at times like these).

I like to call this the Unwanted Gift Syndrome. Symptoms of this infliction include:

· Psychedelic sweaters with dancing reindeer
· Bobble-head dolls of political figures
· Homemade arts and crafts
· Purple and orange argyle socks

They may say that it's the thought that counts, but what really counts is getting something that you can actually use. Instead of standing in line at the return counter, tossing in the trash receptacle, or storing away to gather dust (and later brought out when the gift giver drops in for a visit), you could consider using these unwanted items as a means to get what you really wanted. What might not be your cup-of-tea could be a treasure to someone else.

You can have a post-holiday party for you and your friends, at which everyone brings an unwanted gift for an exchange. White elephant exchange games are great for things like this. You could also utilize online barter sites, like SwapThing.com, to list your item and see if it piques the interest of someone who may have something you want.

Not all gifts fall into the realm of our expectations, but after feigning excitement for these unique treasures, you don't have to live with them forever. We all have differing tastes, so you never know who might find that inner beauty you just don't see.

SwapThing http://www.swapthing.com is a site focused on building a strong swap community online. The ShareThing http://www.swapthing.com/user/Nonprofit.jsp program helps non-profits get access to item & cash donations as well as volunteers and professional services. Valentines Day Love Letter The Best And Most Romantic Gift Is Also The Least Expensive

Writen by Vijay Kannan

You don't have to spend a fortune this Valentine's Day to show your partner that you love them!

One of the most romantic, creative and inexpensive gifts you can give your partner this Valentine's Day is a heartfelt love letter, written from the bottom of your heart!

A heartfelt letter from a man can mean so much more to a woman than just a bunch of roses, box of chocolates or a piece of jewelry.

However, most men feel challenged when it comes to expressing their love in words, especially in writing.

But, with a little help, every man can write a love letter that is sure to move their partner to tears.

You can write a breakthrough love letter by following these 6 simple steps:

1. Remember, There Are No Rules In A Love Letter - A love letter is an intimate conversation between two people and there are no rules to be abided by. Yes, do watch for spelling errors, but do not get caught up in getting the letter right.

2. Collect Your Thoughts – Take some time to think about what you want to say before you start writing. Focus on only one or two ideas in your letter; this reduces the chances of feeling overwhelmed.

3. Overcoming Writer's Block - For most people, the difficulty in letter-writing is the start and the close. You don't have to write the letter in a linear fashion. Write the part that comes to you first. You can always go back and complete the other sections later. Never feel that you have nothing to write about, as the simplest things can make a great letter.

4. Write From Your Heart - Be personal, be yourself. Fill your letter with life. Let your letters be as if you were there talking to your partner face to face. Tell her how much you love her and why.

5. Surprise Your Partner - Surprise your partner by sharing something very intimate with her, that maybe you didn't express in the past. Talk about something very unique about her that you cherish.

6. Make An Offer She Cannot Refuse - Offer to do something that you know will make her really, really happy. It doesn't have to be in the form of an expensive gift. It could be as simple as making dinner or giving her a massage, but the key is for you to focus on her 100% and give her your undivided attention.

A love letter written using the above steps is sure to be cherished, saved and read many times over, for many years to come!

Write a love letter this Valentine's Day that is timeless and everlasting!

Thanksgiving Your Gratitude List

Writen by Jeff Herring

Here comes another Thanksgiving, and with it, lots of talk and writing about being grateful.

This is a good thing, that should be carried in our hearts and minds all year long.

A gratitude list

"He's makin' a list and checkin' it twice...."

Wait a minute, isn't that a Christmas song, and we are talking about Thanksgiving, right?

Right on both counts.

Here's my notion - we all know how to talk the talk about Thanksgiving, gratitude and abundance.

I'm interested in moving you and me from talking the talk to walking the walk.

One way to move from talking the talk to walking the walk is to put it on paper in the form of a gratitude list.

What's on your list?

So get out a sheet of paper or get ready to type on your keyboard.

Think back over the last year. For what are you grateful? What are the things you have to be thankful for? To whom are you grateful?

I want to invite you to actually do three things:

Thing 1: Make the list.

Thing 2: Keep it with you.

Thing 3: Read it at least three times a day. Once when you get up, once as you go to bed, and one other time of your choosing during the day.

Watch your mood and perspective change.

3 Great 4th Of July Party Ideas

Writen by Gail Leino

The Fourth of July is an exciting holiday for many especially children, who can get underfoot in their eagerness to run around and celebrate. Try distracting them at a party with some simple Fourth of July crafts. Using glue, toothpicks, red, white and blue glitter and black construction paper kids can create their own fireworks art. Simply dab the glue on the paper, use a toothpick to create lines like a firework exploding in the sky and sprinkle with glitter. When it's dry they can hang it up on the walls or take it home to put on their fridges.

It can be hard to come up with menu ideas themed after a specific holiday. Make that traditional barbeque meal unique with some red, white and blue potato salad. There are actually blue potatoes that are which you can find in stores. So your salad would contain, small white potatoes, red potatoes and blue potatoes. Make up a patriotic fruit salad with watermelon, apples and blue berries. Strawberry shortcake is a popular dessert for the Fourth of July. You can add some blue food coloring to the cake batter to make it a red, white and blue party.

Create a Fourth of July version of Jeopardy for your party. It can be geared towards adults or kids. For the kids you can give out prizes per question. They can be a piece of candy or red, white and blue star stickers and at the end the winner can get a miniature American flag. Questions shouldn't be too difficult and geared toward the age group. For the very young they can be as simple as "What colors are on the flag?" and for adults you can ask things like "Who was the president indicted in Watergate?" With some of these ideas in play at your next party it should go on without a hitch.

Choosing Gifts For Your Mother

Writen by Mary Williams

Choosing gifts for your mother is not an easy task to do. When we decide to buy a present, we cannot be 100 percent sure that she will really appreciate it or not. How will you know what she'll appreciate? You are either a single mother yourself, you asked one what she could really use, or you read this article. A little bit of knowledge in this area goes a long way.

What you SHOULD NOT do:

Do not buy expensive things for her because you think she may like them. You may think it will be greatly appreciated because she likely wouldn't or couldn't afford to buy it for herself. This idea is wrong That's usually not that case. She'll be very gracious to your face and probably genuinely appreciate the thought. But she may be thinking "couldn't she have just given me the money so I could get my brakes fixed" or "yeesch, I could pay my electric bill with the money she spent on this!" What many single mothers need is relief. They need a small slice of life taken off their shoulders. They need someone to take their children for three hours so they can have an uninterrupted bath or a nap.

What you SHOULD do:

What would bring a single mother great joy is to have you contact any of the utility companies and pay a month's bill. She'd love car wash coupons because that may be something frivolous to her, but who doesn't appreciate a nice clean car. "Let's see, do I get eggs and milk, or do I drive my car through the car wash?" Or just show up someday with a hose and a bucket and wash it for her – inside and out. Make up babysitting coupons or better yet, just insist on picking up the kids Friday night to take them to a dinner and a movie. Give Mom some space.

What you have to do is finding a common theme in your mother. They don't necessarily need help and wouldn't ask for it, but if they received help, it would mean the WORLD to her. Instead of thinking of things that are special and pretty for her, consider what would make her life easier. This isn't like the old adage you don't buy your wife a frying pan for her birthday. With single parents, moms in particular, you need to keep in mind relief. How can you give this woman a small nugget of relief to make her life easier?

Vegetarian Thanksgiving No Turkeys

Writen by Sean Carter

What comes to your mind when you first think of Thanksgiving? The big fat golden-brown turkey? To millions, a Vegetarian Thanksgiving would mean no heaps of turkey meat at their dining table to feast on, but to the turkeys it would mean freedom to LIVE.

Thanksgiving is a time for giving thanks to God for blessings received during the year. It is usually a family day, celebrated with joyous reunions, feastings and prayers. Families and friends come together to enjoy the Macey's Thanksgiving Parade and Football. Although it is a major celebration in the United States and Canada, other countries like Japan, South Korea, the Philippines, Laos, Liberia, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, etc also celebrate this joyous holiday.

Vegetarian Thanksgiving is a term which has slowly become popular all over, not only with the vegetarians but also among the non vegetarians. Being veg. is a journey, not a destination - even with its back roads, detours and speed bumps. Thanksgiving used to be a vegetarian's worst nightmare, but no longer. More and more vegetarian groups are holding dinners and celebrations, and there are even caterers and food companies specializing in a wide selection of meatless alternatives.

The living and the dead! If turkeys were our companions, we would be terribly upset with the death of any one of them; but because they are "food", we are indifferent to their death. Thousands of free-range turkeys are raised in a single warehouse-like structure forced to stand on accumulated fecal waste and breathe in ammonia fumes. These turkeys are then taken to the slaughterhouse through transport containers where they are hung upside down in shackles. There they cry out in fear and pain as they await their own slaughter. Think of how much it hurts when we get a little speck in our eye, and we might understand the degree of suffering that the turkeys are been forced to endure day after day. When left the way God intended turkeys to be, they have a wonderful and close family life. It is not human to deprive them of this gift from God.

There is a lot more to explore at a thanksgiving dinner table than just turkeys. Some food items that I can suggest, which I found from some great recipe sites, would be:

APPETIZERS/STARTERS

Guacamole, a Relish plate of sliced vegetables (Crudités) and White wine.

MAIN COURSE

Vegan Nut Roast à la PeTA

Ingredients:

'The roast':

Two tablespoons oil or margarine

2 large onions, chopped fine

5 cloves garlic, minced

3 cups raw cashews

1 1/2 cups bread

1 cup soup stock (or water)

Salt and pepper

1/2 teaspoon nutmeg

2 tablespoons lemon juice

'The stuffing':

3 cups bread cubes, toasted

Two tablespoons margarine, melted but not hot

1/2 to 3/4 cup finely-chopped onion

1 cup chopped celery

1/2 teaspoon thyme

1/2 teaspoon marjoram

1/2 teaspoon sage

3 tablespoons parsley, chopped

Salt to taste

Method:

Cook the onion and garlic in the oil or margarine until tender, and remove from the heat.

Chop the cashews by hand or in a food processor; cut up the bread as well. Add the cashews and bread to the onion, then add the vegetable stock, salt and pepper, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Put half of this mixture into a small, non-stick loaf pan. Mix together all the ingredients from the second list. Put the mixture on top of the stuff in the loaf pan, and add the rest of the first mixture so that there are three layers of food in the pan. Place the pan on a baking sheet or in a larger loaf pan, and bake at 400 degrees F for half an hour. The top should be browned. Let the roast cool for a few minutes, then turn the pan over and serve the roast on a plate. Serve with gravy if desired, keeping in mind that it is a very rich dish.

Notes:

The roast will take about an hour to prepare. This recipe makes roughly six servings.

Other main courses items could be: Home-made bread, Salad, Steamed carrots and green beans, Mashed potatoes, rolls, Bread stuffing, Red wine, Vegan Bisquits, Vegan Nut Roast with Stuffing à la PeTA, Vegan Gravy and Simple Cranberry Sauce.

DESERT

Vegan Pumpkin Pie

Ingredients:

1 350-g box of silken firm tofu, drained

1 heaping cup of cooked or canned pumpkin

1 to 1 1/4 cups brown or golden sugar, not packed tight

dash salt

4 teaspoons blended "pumpkin pie spice" OR:

1 teaspoons cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon ground dry ginger

1/2 teaspoon ground cloves

1/2 teaspoon allspice

1 teaspoons nutmeg

1 pie crust

Method:

Heat oven to 375 degrees F. Blend the tofu in a food processor or with a blender until smooth and cream-like, for about four minutes. Stop the machine every once in a while to scrape large pieces of tofu down into the machine's blades. Add the cooked pumpkin and blend some more, again stopping the machine and scraping the mixture down. The result should be a light orange-colored paste with no lumps of tofu. Put the paste into a large mixing bowl and add the sugar, salt, and spices. Mix well and spoon it into the pie crust; decorate with cheerful shapes of leftover crust, if desired. Bake 30 to 40 minutes or until the crusts are dark brown. Serve warm or chilled, plain or topped with whipped cream or ice cream.

Notes:

This pie takes about two hours to prepare. A single good-sized sugar pie pumpkin will usually yield enough material for two pies: the recipe doubles easily. The pie refrigerates and freezes well.

Other Desert items could be: hot cocoa, Vegan Pumpkin Pie and Butter Tarts.

10 Holiday Sober Savers 2004

Writen by Connie Carpenter

1.) BEGIN NOW !!!

Don't save your shopping, decorating, cooking, wrapping, and cleaning for the last minute. That is too much pressure for anyone. This is the year to be organized, so you'll have time to enjoy the season in sobriety. If you can't get something done, just let it go with no regrets.

2.) Attend your meetings

Start preparing NOW. 'Tis the season! Don't let social invitations distract you from recovery. You'll find a meeting invaluable when you happen to come up against a trigger or some craving. If you start feeling down, or really don't feel like going to a meeting--THIS,is when you really do need to go. That hour of your time may save your life.

3.) Don't take on new commitments.

It just isn't a good idea. Let someone take care of you this year.If asked to do something you may find too stressful simply say, "I'm sorry. I'm doing some developmental work and I'm just too busy to give the attention it deserves..." Making Christmas dinner for 50 people or example, will not help you relax and stay focused on your recovery.

4.) Before planning the family reunions

To be sure you can count on understanding from your family, express your need to celebrate Christmas quietly at home this year. Perhaps you could visit with family and friends before or after the holiday party to share a dessert and catch up on the family news together.

5) Honor the day

Family reunions may stir up resentment.

Be aware that emotions are more sensitive during holidays. We all have high expectations that can't be met . Family reunions stir up old feelings like jealousy, resentment .Don't let them creep thru--even when you see cousin Pete who still owes you $500.handing out 20$ dollar bills. You've waited this long, what's 1 more day ? Enjoy your family, enjoy feeling gratitude for your life, and the sobriety to enjoy it.

6.) When you must attend

Select carefully the events you will attend.Use your own transportation Consider the location, people who will be there and the how much a part they are of your problem.Bring someone who supports your soberity Work out a signal, just in case, you start getting a familiar feeling in your gut.(you know that means trouble)Pull on your ear 'ala Carol Burnett or fold your arms and wink.Thank your host say goodnight and get the heck out of there

7.) Count your blessings

Take the time to compare how your life changed from last year, what you thought this year was going to be ( if you didn't get sober) and just take a moment to dream what next year will be , if you stay on the path Count your blessings ,say a prayer of gratitude and tell the people on your list how thankful you are they are in your life.(this not only reinforces your commitment, but also makes them feel great .)

8.) Use your numbers

When someone is newly sober , often they will need to be in the company of other's in recovery.Sometimes just being in contact will serve to reinforce the determination you have to remain sober.Use the numbers you have collected from the people in the" rooms ".They won't be bothered ,in fact it's more then likely you will provide reinforcement for them also.Even if they don't know they need it !!

9.) Have a plan

Don't leave large blocks of time unaccounted for ,take a look at your planner now , if you see any potential chunks of time when you will be alone plan ahead ,try a new meeting , phone a friend or relative with children , offer to sit them for a few hours ,you'll be a godsend and time with the children will refresh your outlook. While some time alone is a good thing too much alone time is not healthy.

10.) Savor the moment.

Congradulations !!!! You have made it , you've come all this way. Get yourself something , you deserve the best Enjoy the thrill of your victory.Share it with someone special , spend it with your SELF.Simply , acknowlage it . This is your moment , you have earned it .,It doesnt matter if you have a year or 24 hours , your sober and no matter what happens next , This moment will always be exactly what is is now... Your moment to shine.

Funny Gifts To Give Or Not To Give

Writen by Mary Mailler

When deciding whether or not to send someone a funny gift, consider the following two things in order to avoid potentially embarrassing your receiver. First and most importantly, consider your relationship with the recipient in judging the appropriateness of your humor. A secretary, for example, should not give her married boss a suggestive gift on the occasion of his retirement, and likewise, a boss should not give his secretary such a gift in recognition of her tenth anniversary with the firm. Second, consider the occasion, and err on the side of conservatism whenever doubt exists as to whether or not it calls for humor. It is never appropriate, for example, to give a gag gift to a bride or groom on their wedding day, nor is ever acceptable to send a card or gift that makes fun of something personal such as a person's appearance, health or age.

Unless you are absolutely positive of the recipient's sense of humor, it is better, as a rule, not to send gifts that are humorous if there's a chance they might offend. If you simply cannot resist the temptation to yuk it up at your friend's expense, practice at least some degree of restraint in choosing the gift by keeping a few common-sense rules of etiquette in mind. Always consider carefully your receiver's audience at the time your gift is revealed. Will there be children present at the party? Will someone's wife be offended by what your gift implies? Ask yourself if a loved one's feelings might be hurt when they open up a gift that makes fun of their personality, their physical appearance or their age?

Even if your recipient seems to possess a great sense of humor when he or she is alone with you, that does not indicate a "green light" for you to give a funny gift that teases. Always remember that there are people out there who enjoy dishing it out and playing their jokes upon others, but when the tables are turned, they cannot take your ribbing no matter how harmless it may seem to be. It is in this way that some people are more selective than others in maintaining a sense of humor. If this is the case with your friend, you are a better off in taking the highroad than in choosing a gift that may cause his haunches to rise. Remember too that what you and your friend once shared as a private joke between you many years ago, may not seem so funny to him now. Understand and accept that with maturity, a person's perception as to what is funny and what is not may change with time.

So think twice before you decide to send or give a funny gift, and always remember that a gift is more than just a gift, it is an affirmation of the relationship that you share with your recipient right now. If you do decide to send a funny gift, be sure that it is one that will not only make the recipient laugh, but that his guests will laugh as well. An appropriately funny gift should also turn out, somehow, to be useful later on, after the occasion has past.

Does all of this serious talk about gift giving take the wind out of your sails when it comes to showing your good cheer? Well don't let it, because there are certain types of gifts that you can give that do manage to tickle a funny bone while remaining well within the bounds of what most people would consider acceptable humor. Traditionally, these gifts are items which are not normally given as gifts, but for the circumstances of the occasion make them funny in and of themselves. The young graduate, for example, who is sure to set the world afire, may be given a fancy lighter to start him blazing down his path. Later on in life, when he's succeeded in making partner, he may display or keep the lighter as a reminder of his earlier days.

Gifts of anticipation can also be humorous in a good hearted in a unique and sentimental way, and these gifts are the easiest to give when one's financial situation does not allow for something bigger. As an example, a young sailing enthusiast might be given a world map wrapped up with a card that expresses something like the following : We hope that the enclosed map will help you to find all of the treasures of the world, and, the quickest way back home should you find yourself in need of a hot shower and a place to get your laundry done for free.

One last thing to keep in mind when choosing funny gifts for women, as a rule, woman are less appreciative of such things, especially when the gift is given by a male. According to a large-scale survey, the percentage of females who are receptive to receiving funny gifts is very insignificant in comparison to men. The reason is not likely to be that women in general lack the sense of humor of men, but more likely, it is because most women do not like to be made to feel as though they are being laughed at in any way. Just as women don't commonly like to talk about their age, neither to they want do be reminded of it by the so called funny cards and gifts they are bound to receive when turning yet another year.

In general occasions of gift giving are taken more seriously by women and by nature, women are more sensitive, and more likely, therefore, to be upset by someone's clumsy attempt at being funny. It is always best with women to be sincere in your attempt to recognize an important occasion; always remember that with women, it is not about the gift itself, its about the thought that you put into picking it out for them. For her, it is your intention that turns a humbly wrapped trinket into precious treasure every time.

Gift Wrap Your Affection

Writen by A Raymond Randall

Drudgery and debt can sour holiday spirits. Holiday cheer can easily become crumpled Holiday commitments tied with the bows of gift-giving competition, My grandmother crocheted the saying, "The gift is small but love is all." Today, the motto is "Give me more". My wife's grandmother remembers the year her gift was an orange for Christmas. She recalls that year and gift more than any of the other 91 Christmas days she celebrated.

Gift giving becomes difficult when the recipient has expectations. Children do this always. "This is not what I wanted." "How come you got this one?" "I don't like the color." Adults say a polite thank you while thinking about where to return the gift. In fact, children and spouses make their disappointment obvious. An acquaintance looks for some value and purpose in the gift, puts it back in the box, writes a thank you note, and saves it for the yard sale 3 years later.

Three emotions seem to be the best guidance for gift-giving.

Give without expectation

The ancient saying, "It is better to give than to receive" works. Satisfaction fills your heart when exchanging gifts does not matter. Find ways to give to those who cannot give back. Working at a food kitchen on Christmas Day, or helping workers tidy up a shelter for the homeless will give you insights and joy unknown before.

Every community has elderly people sitting alone during the Holidays. You will find them at table with their memories, but not much of an appetite. Bring them a home-cooked meal, or invite them to your table for dinner. Ask the local clergy or check with your municipal officials, "Do you know of anyone who lives alone and would like a meal or company?" These simple acts of kindness to those who cannot give back will bring you unspeakable joy and satisfaction.

Give without excess

Diamonds get dirty; silver turns dull. Despite the commercial for a high-end luxury vehicle, giving a gift-wrapped car seems excessive to me. How many of us can afford that expense? Too many holiday shoppers will spend what they do not have to give what they cannot afford. Banks will soon require repayment minimums that burden you more.

It takes 30 seconds to rip wrapping paper, about 20 minutes to clean-up the living room of gift-wrappings, 20 minutes to bring it to the curb or the dump, 20 minutes to get it stored in drawers or shelves. Gift-giving ends quickly. The size or cost of your gift will not make the moments more memorable. You might be the only one thinking about your holiday excesses next July when the 7th credit card statement must be paid.

Give with energy

T.S. Eliot's poem, "The Journey of the Magi" tells the story of three wise men bringing gifts to a small manger in Bethlehem. They traveled long distances over dry, barren sand. Eliot says it was "just the worst time of the year...finding the place; it was (you may say) satisfactory."

Gift giving is not always simple joy. At times, it is hard and demanding. Attempt gifts that come from your hand and talents. Write a letter, paint a painting, scrub the kitchen floor or clean the dirty prints off every entry door. Set someone free from the mundane with an energy that gifts from this year to the next. Make gifts of new habits with an energetic love for someone special.
